A question on dumping...
I am still pre-op...but was wondering about dumping syndrome....
Now if I have certain foods...for instance a cupcake with a ton of frosting on it...or a really high fat meal with tons of butter (or cream...like half-and-half), I will get a super bad stomch ache that really hurts...and I will need to litterally hightail it to the restroom at some point after eating the meal. Then I will have the runs for a while...not just once...
Has this happend to you pre-op? How is this different from dumping?
I wonder, because eventhough I know I react this way to certain foods....I STILL eat them. I know its destructive...but I guess its part of being a food addict. I fear dumping syndrome might not deter me from eating what I shouldn't after suregry...
I mean I am going to really try and focus on being healthy and eating what makes me feel the best and have the best results..but I am just wondering if the dumping syndrome will really be that big of a deterent...

Not every person gets dumping syndrome...and some people have different symptoms. If I eat too much sugar the only thing that happens to me is that I feel VERY TIRED and I feel CRAPPY and the only way for me to get rid of it is to take a nap...I sometimes get the bathroom problem, but I don't get the nausea, bad stomach ache, etc. The dumping syndrome does not stop me from eating "bad" stuff. The scale stops me from eating the bad stuff.

You will probably get a few different resonses to this.
For me, I can eat starchy carbs now and I don't dump (I did in the first year). But after eating foods like this, I feel sluggish, want to sleep and just a general ill feeling. I can stay at work and function in this phase and it lasts about an hour.
Dumping - I don't dump on fats - in fact if I have something with sugar alcohols or sugars and I have with fats, its almost like a blocker for me. If its low fat, then I usually dump. Dumping for me now is few and far between..mostly as I stay away from the foods that trigger me. Stress causes me to dump most of the time. I can have the same food one day without stress without problem, have it with stress and I dump.
Very few foods make me vomit now. In fact I went a whole year without one episode. Mostly happens when I don't chew well enough, something doesn't go down well or a pissy pouch. I thought I would be ok with 2 sips of my husbands milkshake 2 weeks ago..nope - had to pull off the highway to let me barf up the slime. You just never know....so I don't test the waters too often, especially in public.
So I guess I have 3 different pouch issues.....dumping so far has been a deterant for me, as is the ill feeling of the pouch. I dont like not feeling well. I have to attend lots of lunch meetings and these are the toughest for me. When I have to travel (work and pleasure) I am very careful on my choices and always have a backup plan. The farther you get out from surgery, I find it much easier...but VERY VERY thankful that I do react to certain foods! I don't know what it would be like if I didn't dump, but I do know my feelings towards food has changed dramatically and I don't like the taste of things I would indulge in before. Thats a good thing.

Dumping's way different from getting a tummy ache...my heart races, I get sweaty, I feel super tired and just YUCKY. And yes, it is a deterrent for me. I only dump on very high fat foods (fried, full fat dairy) and it definitely influences my eating habits. Sometimes I just can't afford to go lay down for 20 minutes in the middle of my day!

Okay, this is going to sound silly, but I am new to this process...
What exactly is dumping? From what I have read so far, it is the feeling of being sick and the after effects from eating/drinking something you shouldn't have after the surgery. This effect can vary from person to person.
Is this correct?
On another note, I am like the original poster though as well. I am lactose intolerant yet still eat dairy (I LOVE cheese) and I also have a soft spot for caeser salad, yet every time I eat I feel sick to my stomache and am making mad dashes to the restroom. It too scares me that my body goes through that yet still eat the foods.

Everyone is different
If I do too much sugar, I get this woozy, headachey feeling and have to go lie down. If I had way too much sugar, (my body reacts pretty quickly so I can't usually get this far) I start sweating and feel faint.
Then there is the whole thowing up thing. Some foods will make me throw up and let me tell you - throwing up post op is not like it is pre-op. You get this whole slime thing with foam and when things come up, they are exactly like they were when they went in. It is not pretty. Anything that has made me sick has not been a temptation again - let me tell you.
But - if you have major issues, maybe you need to work those out first? Only you know for sure.
Good luck.

The dump I experienced the only time I tried icecream, even sugar free, is enough to keep me away. never again do I want to feel like that!

Lynda, what about frozen yogurt? Please oh please say yes! LOL, I do realize everyone's different, I was just curious since you have problems with ice cream. Frozen yogurt, and even regular yogurt - absolutely love McDonald's yogurt parfaits - are a staple in my "diet"

The yogurt in those parfaits would probably kill me if I try to eat them now! Too much sugar. You can make your own. Buy some fruit and use the Light & Fit yogurt. (The lowest sugar content yogurt I have found.)
Dumping is so much worse than feeling icky after eating something preop. Trust me. You won't like it.

um yeah, I'm really sorry, but the one of the ones I tried was frozen yogurt at Souplantation. so sick, I'll NEVER do that again. It was after that that I tried the no sugar added ice cream...NEVAH! and I really like ice cream...what I can tolerate are the Starbucks frappucino ice cream bars...yum!
