Default Would you be honest?

I recently returned to work after RNY..of course everyone has come around to check my progress(can I say I fell like a circus side show)My question stems from a co-worker inquiring about the surgery..She need to lose 75pds and wanted to know about the RNY..I went into details about what she could and could not do..her response is I just need a quick way to get the weight off and then I'll be able to control it on my own...My only response was (with mouth open)to do alot of research on the surgery because that is not the way it works..She has already started the pre-approval process...What I wanted to say was join Weight Watchers..but for the sake of being rude I kept my mouth shut..I figure she will not be able to pass the phyc.eval..Any thoughts?

With "only" 75 lbs to lose she may not qualify, either. You're right, anyone thinking this is a magic bullet needs to do some real research!
Good luck on your journey!

I have found there are two types of Per-OP patients. Those that have hit a brick wall hard, and research the bejeezes out of this because it is going to change their lives....and those who think..'well, this will get the weight off, once that happens, I'm good to go.' It is the second opinion that leads to most of the problems and type of people you do NOT see here. Those are the people who have the surgery for the wrong reasons, and yes, they make it through the evals. and everything else. They are the reason 1/2 of the world see's surgery as "The easy way out", because for them it is. Those of us who struggle daily, search out support, keep in touch with the diets, proteins and stay on track....those are the ones that have changed their lives and have worked to make this surgery a success. The others are hoping the success will come from surgery, which is their #1 problem.
If I have learned anything, I have learned that some people will NOT listen no matter how hard you try to tell them, others will and will understand.

There are those that are able to fool everyone and get the surgery anyway. What I wonder is will they be able to keep it off? It takes so much self control and changing of habits. If a person isn't fully committed then not only will they likely fail... but they will spend the rest of their life either being miserable due to the things they can no longer have or they will have them any way and spend all their time being sick.

However on to the really important part of your post... CONGRATS on the surgery! Back to work well done! Soon they will no longer need to ask you questions your body will just shrink away and your inside HOTTIE will emerge

Default Maybe

Maybe we shouldn't be so quick to judge. I suspect many of us have been at the point where we thought "if we could just get the weight off we would be good to go"

Just like an alcholic, do we think that the alchohic should be at rock bottom before trying to do something to get a handle on their illness?

I know I wish I had the surgery 10 or 15 years earlier! Maybe I would have sabatoged it maybe not. Who knows. But everyone here says we have the tool for life so even if I had sabatoged it wouldn't I be able to get back to basics and succeed?

As far as suggesting weight watchers goes. I know I did it tons of times as well as every other diet out there. Didn't work. I don't think it is fair to direct someone down a path that has only a 1% success rate (my doctor says that dieting has a 1% success rate, with success being defined as losing 20lbs and keeping it off for 5 years).

I know many people here think only 75lbs is not worth the surgery. But I was "only" 100lbs overweight >>> still morbidly obese! with diabetes, cholesterol, blood pressure and who knows what other damage to my organs etc.

Anyways those are just my thoughts

Laurie

Default Rachel~

You made me smile with your humble pie comment.Looking fab BTW!

Thanks~

I think you were very honest with her. This surgery is not a quick fix by any means...if she is approved...she will be eating more of her words than food for about six months

It is tough even with NO complications.IMO

How can people not thinking of it as a quick fix? When I run into people now...they have no clue of what it takes, no matter how much you try to explain. Even my friends, who saw me go through everything, don't quite remember how it was and see only the before and after results.

werd. Kinda sucks it works that way. Everyone thinks its sooo easy. Unfortunately there is no magic pill nor magic surgery that will keep the weight off. It all comes down to you making the changes in your life and habits to stay healthy and fit.

Sad most people don't realize that.
