Wine, wine, & more Wine
I am curious for all you post-op's out there about drinking? I like to have my wine. A glass here and there. I also have girls night, which means we go out for drinks. I wanted to know if I can still have a glass or two of wine? I'm not too much into beer, although it is great to have a nice cold corona on a hot summer day. What about the once in awhile margarita or cosmo?

There are many on this list who have commented on drinking, the main thing to know is that alcohol affects you much differently now. It doesnt take as much to get a buzz, but as is true with anything if you push it and push it you can raise your tolerance. I guess it depends a lot on you and your ability to control what you drink. When I was in my 20's and 30's I really liked my wine, and I did not have a great shut off valve. If I had a drink of wine at night it usually ended up in 4 or 5. I am in my 50's now, and drinking is not that big of a deal. One glass of wine ( if I can finish it) and that is all I am interested in. My doctor (who is in Orange County) told me to be careful of drinking after GBS surgery. He said people who are prone to drinking have a tendancy to just focus on the drinking and don't ever even think much about eating. Alcohol burns your stomache lining, we don't have as much stomache lining left anymore, and there are not as much digestive juices and enzymes in there breaking things down. So the alcohol is really working hard on your stomache and also being dumped into your bloodstream much faster. You have to understand yourself well enough to take those chances. My vote would be no, I wouldnt mess with it. But it is going to be your decision and your choice ultimately, so whatever you do, do it very cautiously and think about it before you do.

I am four years out, and on occasion will have a cosmo. I do just fine with them. I don't recommend the fruity margaretta's as they are nothing but sugar. As for wine, I tried it once during my high school reunion years ago, and it just made me a bit tipsy. Didn't like that.

It is a matter of what you want. I drink wine. None of the fuity ones usually a dry wine. And a margarita now and than. I never drive because one makes me high now. It use to take a lot more so be careful.

The vapors!
You get buzzed on half a drink now if even that much, cracks me up! Somehow I can never remember when drinking thatIm not that nearly 300 pound chick with a full intestine anymore. Just make sure you always have a desiginated driver, it really is a whole new experience now.
I have drank it all,but for the beer. Cosmos, Martini's Margritas, Tequila shots, Tequila on the rocks....... I did okay. My only word of caution is on the Margarita's watch whatyou eay with them. Both times I have drank them at parites that had sweets around.... and so I had A cookie.... dump city both times. (Then again milk does the same thing too.) They are really high in sugar, so just watch whatyou eat when you are out celebrating, that is something to keep in mind! Have fun and be careful!

If you do drink, just remember this:
You will get to the point of "FLYING HIGH" 5 x as fast as the normal person if not faster. It's hits you faster and harder than the average bear.
You really need to be aware of this if you drink beacuse it is easy to forget when you drink.
On the flip side, you can sober up fater than a normal person. At least that is the case with me. Just remember that you need to avoid BEER, CHAMPANE, OR ANY MIXED DRINK WHERE THE MIXER HAS CARBONATION, IE..SODA, TONIC, SELTZER ETC...
Of course it it better to avoid alcohol entirely, but that is easier said then done.
I would not attempt to try anything until you are at least 2-3 months, and if so do in your own home. Because if you go out anywhere, and have a problem, everyone there will know you're having a problem. Always try to try something for the first time in the comfort, safety, and privacy in you own home.
Hope that helps!

Just a tip. Do not drink and drive. It is way too risky after WLS.

Thanks so much for your reply. It was very helpful, and I plan on taking your advise.
Especially about trying it out at home first. I've heard about the "dumping" and I am really scared about happening.
I am scheduled for my surgery on the 24th, and I am getting very anxious!
