Default blood sugar question

Is your blood gluclose level supposed to go up or down when you eat?

My doctor started me monitoring mine on Wednesday... it's like 84 when i wake up in the morning and then it drops after I have my protein drink... within 45 minutes....

Then I noticed in the afternoon by 1.5 hours I eat my lunch... I get that dizzy feeling and nausea... I checked it and it dropped to 69.

Okay last one... I had a mostly protein meal... canitas, few beans and sour cream.... after 15 minutes...nausea, dizzy so i tested and it had gone from 91 prelunch to 68.... really fast... then I waited 3 hours, nothing but water.... 100

What does all this mean? i know we have some nurses and one very sexy & hot surgeon... is this normal?

my BP has been dipping during the day too.... in the low 80/53"... the highest has been in the 101/69

Default It is carbs

Carbs make your sugar go up. When diabetics are deciding how many units of insulin to take (well, this is what my students who have diabetes do) they count the carbs, multiply by units of insulin (that their doctor has figured out for them) and take a shot to counteract the carbs. Protein is different - doesn't affect blood sugar the same way.

I don't know what you doctor is looking for - but just write it all down and tell him what you found.

Does that help?? It is not the whole story of course! But if you're wondering why you aren't going up after your protein, that is part of why.

Oh - and BP can be related to salt too - didn't a few folks on the forum have to increase salt intake to counteract dizziness?? Zen, maybe, possibly I think....Someone else help me out here...

There is new data emerging that low blood sugar my be common amongst GBP patients.

We are used to eating high carb meals, with some insulin resistance. Therefore we have extra receptors to catch that insulin that is floating around and out pancreas can churn it out pretty well.

Now that we have lost the weight, the increased receptors are now more sensitive and still present and our pancreas is working fine making insulin so we have an exhaggerated (sp??) response to sugar. It enters our system, we make a bit more insulin than we should and are more sensitive to it, so our glucose level drops more than it should.

Our sugar level can also go inappropriately low between meals. There is no magic number as it is based on symptoms. Eat a little something (not simple sugar) every couple of hours and it should make it better.

thanks guys.......

My doctor is watching for reactive hypoglycemia... or something like that....

Its very weird how I feel after I eat. The only problem is when I eat I get nauseous so I avoid it as long as possible..... so many things to do...

I never had these problems before, GBS is wupposed ot make us healthier... not worse! But hey I can deal.

So small meals.... fewer carbs... is that right?

Sounds like you already got good advice, and that link looked helpful. Does your doctor know about these symptoms you're having? I hope it gets better soon.
