Jessica, I know the memorials you are talking about on obesityhelp.com, and I think it is totally inappropriate to have that on a wls support forum.
Your surgeon will tell you his own particular statistics, and what the national statistics are - and the risks percentages are going down drastically in the last months. The reason for that is that many surgeons put into place during the process a number of preventatives. For example, my surgeon had me have an x-ray of my pouch (using a dye/liquid that I swallowed) before i could even have an ice cube touch my lips. The reason? To determine if there were any leaks. And there are processes in place during the surgery to prevent leaks. I am using leaks as an example of serious risk. These preventive measures didn't exist in previous years to the degree that they do now.
Having said that, I agree with Cat_Lover. Being prepared is an important part of the process of pre-op. You have to prepare your mind as much as your body for this life-changing event. If fear is ruling you now, then perhaps it would be better to take a breath, and absorb the process a bit first.
