Aleve?
My arthritis is really acting up, and Aleve (and not Tylenol) helps my husband so much. I am afraid, however, to take it before asking your opinion.
Anybody have experience with taking Aleve post op? I am 3.5 months post op and need arthritis relief.
I can always crush or cut the pill with my handy dandy pill cutter/crusher!

I was told it's okay, as long as it's not in 'therapeutic' amounts, meaning as long as it's not every day to stave off a long term problem.

I was told not to take it. It is one of those dreaded NSAIDS that they tell you to stay away from. If your arthritis is really bothering you call your doctor. I know there is something my surgeon prescribes for his patients with arthritis but I don't remember the name. Also, I have heard of surgeons who will allow their patient to take some NSAIDS but then you have to be on something for your stomach like Prevacid, etc.
The problem with NSAIDS is that it drastically increases your chance of an ulcer. You now only have 1 or 2 major sources of blood supply to your new pouch and it is much more vulnerable to getting ulcers.

Please be careful with this Claire. I was told to never take it also. I have had an ulcer and then it to reoccur and it's NOT fun! It hurts a great deal! Plus can't eat and throw up alot. So, please ask your doctor. It's alot harder to get rid of an ulcer than to prevent one. My pain managment dr. prescribed me a cream that is topical and it's an anti-inflammatory that is supposed to work just as well as one taken orally, but I can't remember the name of it. It had to be mixed at a pharmacy that does those types of things and is VERY expensive. I don't have insurance so was unable to get it, but wish I could have. He said it works really well for the patients he prescribes it for. So, maybe you can ask your doc about this? It's worth a question to him I think.

I'm going to listen to you guys. I will call my surgeon's office on Monday and see what they recommend. I'm glad I asked this group first. What you are saying makes good sense, and is full of good information.
Many thanks!
