question
I am 6 days away from my surgery, and I have this problem. I am wondering if anyone else has gone through this.
I have been awake since 9am on Monday, it is now 5:45pm on Tuesday. I CANT SLEEP
I am exhausted, yet when ever I lay down, I just toss and turn, no sleep at all.
I even went and got a prescription of Xanax from my doctor, and I still cant sleep, pardon me, but WTF is going on?
I NEED SLEEP

Sorry, but I don't know what to tell you. I sure hope you work through this soon. I know how exhausting it can be. Are you worried about the surgery or anything else? Caffeine??? Are you eating or drinking anything new?
Good luck my friend

don't get all hooked on xanax trying to sleep. Ask your doctor for a small amount of mood stablizer..usually they make you sleep. Good luck lack of sleep makes me crazy. Janie

what I'd do, if you're in bed thinking about the surgery coming up, is disallow the topic for thought. You can safely do that, and think about it during the daytime. I find that easier to do if I have something else ready to think about, like memorized poem or Bible verses if you're so inclined, or a mindless song such as a children's song. Just make sure the distraction topic doesn't remind you of the topic you're trying to forget.

I think you're just excited about your upcoming sugery. BTW, congrats!
Maybe you could take a tylenol pm or a benodryl (sp) to help you sleep. But be careful doing that too many nights this week. I now (probably mentally) "need" to take at least one tylenol pm each night.
If my tylenols don't work, I try to do a difficult math problem in my head or force myself to only think in my very limited french or spanish. I am usually out soon.

Sleep technique
This one helps when I'm really struggling. I watch my clock alarm, and try to count to exactly 60 in my head before each minute flips over. Forcing yourself to keep your eyes open and watching the numbers will make it almost irresistible to close your eyes. It's mind-numbing without drugs... Got more tricks like that if you need 'em... long-time insomniac. Neither Lunesta nor Ambien are working for me.

So screw it
So don't sleep. Decide to stay awake until your surgery. The more you stress, the less likely it is that you'll be able to sleep.
Have you tried reading any old text books? Watching a yoga video? Writing your pre-op story?
You will pass out eventually, just don't watch the clock, don't expect to sleep and start doing some projects. Nothing with heavy machinery though - or fire/glue guns etc.
You can't fight the emotional roller coaster this is. I've stayed awake for two days before in stressville - when I gave up and decided to go with it, it would pass. But you have to give up and really believe you're not going to sleep until they put in that IV at the hospital. Who cares?? You doing the SATs soon? Performing brain surgery. Go borry War and Peace from the Library. Go with the flow man!

Whatever you do, DO NOT take any medications-- even over-the-counter meds, vitamins, herbals, etc.-- in the week before surgery that your anaesthesiologist does not know about... some medications need to be COMPLETELY out of your system before they put you under anaesthesia, or else it could cause complications-- sometimes SERIOUS complications.
I'm sure you are nervous with surgery coming up so soon... but better to not sleep and be tired than to take a pill that might leave you dead on the operating table, you know?
Good luck and best wishes for your surgery... for me, the week BEFORE was WAY worse than the week AFTER!!

I agree with Gina, if you cant sleep dont, find things to do with the time, read a good book, watch some good movies, when you are exhausted beyond the beyond you will sleep, if your stressing over the surgery, remember everyone on this site has been there and we are all still here to tell the tale. Good luck to you, if I was in New York....hmmm, well thats another story Good luck to you
