Default Carbonated Drinks

What's ther deal with carbonated drinks. Have been reading where most people cannot tolerate them after surgery. Why not? What does it do??

early post-op I can see how it would make you feel sick as hell. It's not so much toleration as much as the threat of stretching the pouch. I myself haven't had soda since surgery... beer is a different story.

Thumbs up Carbonation

I have spoken to both Dr. Callery and Dr. Potts regarding this specific issue. When I was about 4 months out, I accidentally consumed a carbonated beverage. I didn't realize it was carbonated until the first sip and let me tell you, it hurt! So I haven't gone there again! However, I do know some people who drink diet sodas, regluar sodas, and beer upon occasion and do fine with it. I personally don't want to go back there again.

However, Dr. Callery & Dr. Potts both stated that "there is no Scientific evidence showing that drinking carbonated drinks stretches your pouch". Dr. Callery's stand is that if you go back to drinking Diet sodas, he is afraid you will start on regular sodas again and we all know that those are loaded with sugar and calories. Moderation I think he said was the key to this. They just don't want us to get back into bad habits, that is why they don't want us drinking carbonated drinks. If anyone disagrees, please ask them for yourself. I am just quoting what I was told.

I am not, however, justifying or encouraging anyone to go out there and get those diet sodas or anything, just stating what was told to me.

if i may add to christina's info - it seems to me that there is a problem with calcium - i can't remember where or who - might have been Kelly that said that the sodas deplete your calcium - I'm 3 months out today - and i have exactly 3 tiny sips in the morning when i get ready for work - so a tiny [diet] soda last like the whole week - haven't had a problem with the bubbles, but i'm not gulping either. I never drank regular soda, so I don't feel like that's a problem for me.

Wow, I forgot about that fact. Kelly did say that one can of soda depletes 1/2 of your calcium intake for the day. That can't be good, especially since we are more prone to osteoporosis not being heavy anymore.

Thanks for reminding me.

Default Tannin,

Tannin - found in caffine depletes calcium in your body.

I will always remember Kelly saying, "Not everyone that drinks soda will fail at this surgery, but of those that failed, 100% of them drank soda". That was enough to scare me off.

Default Old Habits

Talking with Dr. Potts at the early pre-op meeting Tuesday, I told the group that diet colas are bad because we are drinking empty calories and not filling our bodies with healthy protein and water. If we drink sodas instead of eating, our bodies will go into a starvation mode and possible weight gain will be a result. Dr. Potts did say that the diet sodas will not hurt, but it is not a good habit to get back into.

I, personally was a Diet Coke addict and I don't ever want to go back.

Red face carbonation

Under the nutrition section there is an article that I posted about why carbonation is so bad for anybody. I posted this before I started drinking it again. My mom came into town and she drinks a 2 liter of pepsi everyday.. and I started taking sips... and than that turned into a juice glass full then a regular glass full ... help me. I made a promise to the east county group that I would stop... and I did for 10 days and one day since that. i just cant stop.... any advice on how to get this girl back on track? I crave the stuff... the caffeine and the bubbles. Help me pals! maybe I should re read that article, hopefully it can make me sick enough to quit...again... for good! Im sorry east county buddies that I am failing..... I need your guys help! Thanks!
