Default Another question for you all...

Hi..it's me...AGAIN...

I keep reading about people doing the liquid diet before WLS. I haven't heard of anything like that yet from my surgeons office. Should I really be on a diet now? I haven't met with the nutritionalist yet, I still have a lot to do and only a month before my surgery (i like saying that! )...I am supposed to get a call on June the 5th with my appt date with my surgeon, I guess he will let me know all that then. Does everyone do the liquid diet and for how long?

Hi Kelly and welcome to the forum..

Every doctor is different and seems to require different things. As for my doctor they require 2 weeks Optifast liquid diet prior to surgery to shrink you liver. I am currently on my first week, and just having a blast

Just make sure you talk to your doctor at your pre-op appointment

I didn't have to lose weight before surgery, go on a liquid diet, or take any weird cleansing stuff. I was just told to not gain any weight. I had a "Last Supper" party with close friends a few days before surgery and ordered heavy Italian food with all the pasta, bread, dessert, and wine. It was a great night and a good way to say goodbye to that kind of food! However, I don't even miss it now! Your doc will let you know about the liquid diet.

Every surgeon is different. Mine required a 2 week pre-op diet that was 800 calories, low fat, low carbs. It wasn't all liquid but pretty close. My surgeon puts his patients on a specific bariatric product in order to decrease the size of the liver. It is done in order for him to move the liver around easier during the surgery. You see the liver is right where they need to work so the smaller it is the easier it is for the surgeon.

Hello!

No special diet required for me either. (Just can't eat from noon before the surgery. The doctor's office explained that they used to require a diet prior to the procedure mainly to avoid having to deal with an extremely fatty liver. Apparently, the fat on the liver is among the first to go when you diet, and a smaller liver makes the procedure easier. They said that they found that this really only posed a big problem for the largest of patients, so they discontinued requiring it for most patients.

They did tell me not to gain weight in the mean time. When this became a sure thing, my regular doctor took me off my weight loss medicine and I have been gaining ever since. I guess that medicine was doing more than I thought. I told one of the surgeon's office nurses that I had been gaining this weight and she cheerfully responded: "Not for long."

That sure sounded great to me! First, I expected to be scolded a bit, and was pleased that she did not do so, and second because it was such a hopeful statement. Hats off to all those amazing nurses who work with WLS!
