Default I'm back, and complaining

I have been very very luck and had very few complications, and those were my own doing. (hint...just because spaghetti looks really good, it's not good to try it 2 months out of surgery!)

So on Monday I started getting sick, got me a good old case of the 'spring flu'. I made it until Thursday until it got real bad. 'Post-opers' have to be very aware of our intake, especially liquid. It is very easy to get dehydrated. Well by Thursday I was done! So I left work early, my dad actually had to come pick me up and someone had to walk me out because I was so dizzy I couldn't stand up alone. So I came home, tried to drink, but it didn't work well. About 5pm I got a pain in my stomach that wouldn't go away, so I called the doctor. She said go to the ER. That is where the trouble started!

I got there at 10pm. I walk in, the waiting room is busy, not a good sign. I go to sign in and they take me back and I tell the nurse whats wrong and they get me all signed in and registered and send me back to the waiting room. At 12:45 they take me back to an examining room, hand me a gown and tell me they will be right back, now remember, I'm in pain, I'm freezing, and that was with all my clothes on, and I'm severly dehydrated at this point. So I put on the paper gown, and lay down, cover up with my coat because there is no blanket. At 2:30am the doctor comes in and says "So what seems to be the problem?" Everyone should feel very very proud of me, I didn't get up and strangle the dummy! I told him my problems, he ordered bloodwork, IV fluids and a CT scan. The nurse comes in and puts in the IV and goes to put some medicine in it, I ask "What are you giving me?" She says "Tylenol 3 for the pain", I grab the IV and say "You can't do that, I'm allergic to codeine!". You would think the big yellow braclet would have been a clue! Then they come in with 3 cups of a liquid dye to drink for the CT scan. I ask them if they expect me to drink it all. "Oh yes, you need to drink it all, then we wait 90 minutes and do the scan". What are they frickin' kidding me!! I explain again, I had GBS, it will take me about 3 hours to drink that much liquid. They don't understand. Thank goodness the CT tech came down, she understood and told me not to drink it, she would inject me with dye. It's now 5am. I'm still cold, I still have no blanket, and I'm still in pain.

They finally get me something for pain, and take me for the scan. It is not an obstruction so I feel better about that. The doctor tells me I have the flu (no shit!) and the nurse comes back in with more stuff to put in my IV. At this point I'm not letting these people anywhere near me without me asking questions. So I say "Now what are you giving me" she says "Just an antibiotic" I say "What kind" she says "Bactrim, it will help with the flu" Again I grab the IV, and not being able to stand it anymore say "What are you people that stupid?? It says in big letters on my chart, on my wrist and on any prior records you should have pulled that I am VERY allergic to Sulfa drugs" She just looks at me like I'm the idiot!! At this point I have had it, I do what no one my age should do, I threw a hissy fit. It was 6:30 am, I told them I had been there since 10pm the night before and the only thing they had done for me was tried to kill me. I told them I wanted the IV out now, and I was going home. I came home, slept and then felt so bad I went to my parents and laid on their couch for the night. Somehow going to mom's just makes you feel better!

Ok, I'm done now, sorry I just had to bitch for a little while

I am getting better, like I said, nothing helps like laying on your parents couch for a few days and whineing Mom forced some pedilyte (I can't spell it) in me, and I'm drinking now. I just couldn't belive how bad the ER was! I let my doctor know, she was also surprised and said she will look into it, she is on the board of the hospital.

The drinking dye stuff.....ugh...I have to drink 8 ounces a few hours after my surgery so they can check for leaks! Ughh....yucky, puke....I gagged it down and then had diarrhea for 3 days straight!

I avoid the hospital as much as I can. YOu really have to be your own advocate. Can you imagine if you went in unconscious?

I had wondered about drinking fluids post-op. How much is it slowed down?

Yeesh I'm glad you survived your ER visit I'm always vigilant and researching and reading. They treat me like a control freak :shifty: but they're human too, more eyes paying attention is better.

Everyone close to me knows that if I am unconscious, that they need to tell them about the bypass. I also leave the instruction card right behind my license. Scary stuff sometimes in the ER!
