Default Silly Question

You know that feeling you get sometimes (talking pre-surgery) when you have gone too long without eating something and you start to feel really bad....like totally weak and shakey? (just realized I don't know how to spell shaky)

Well I had that happen to me the other day because I had to go for 8 hours without eating anything for a test..and the test was at a bad time so I did not get to eat after the test...then it got out to like 10 hours without eating...but that is not my point.

My question is...how do you avoid getting that feeling after surgery? I really get panicky when I start to feel that way and start eating candy bars or whatever I can get my hands on because i literally feel like I am gonna pass out. Does the frequent eating of the very small amounts keep this from occuring??

Thanks,

Mike

Default Mike,

This concerned me too before surgery. Before surgery, I would get really bad low blood sugar and would feel shaky and basicly really awful if I didn't eat regularly. So far, I have not had that feeling post op. And I do have to admit, that I have gone without a meal because of circumstances beyond my control. Maybe it will happen further post op I don't know.

I used to get the starving/shaky/would eat a live horse feeling before surgery. I could tell when my blood sugar would bottom out and would gorge myself into oblivion. I was worried about the blood sugar/shaky feeling after surgery, but I haven't really noticed it except for very minor incidences when I've gone too long without eating. When that happens and I can't get a decent meal, I'll pop some peanuts or cashews (protein) and I feel fine in a few minutes. I think maybe as you lose weight, your body doesn't require as much fuel to function as it would for a large body, I dunno. I think that low blood sugar and that shaky feeling could actually be a precursor for diabetes and when you lose weight, most of the time your risk for diabetes disappears.

Hi Mike,
Before I had surgery, I used to get really bad "hunger" headaches from not eating for a while. Since surgery, they have disappeared. There are times where I forget to eat, but you just have to remember to eat 3 healthy meals a day and if you get hungry or feel shaky, have something with protein. At first, you won't be able to eat protein bars, but it's something you will want to keep nearby when you are able to eat them. Getting your protein first is the most important thing.

Hope this helps.

Cool Hi Mike

Hi Mike,

I have not had the issue at all so far. If anything I have to remind myself to eat something. It is the wiederest thing for me, to be able to actually forget to eat. Also I did not realize how much I ate before the surgery. Before the surgery I would have swore up and down that I was not a big eater. But you really see how much you ate before when you only have a stomach the size of a golfball.

Well, anyway you are going to great. Good luck,

Davey

I had something similar happen to me last week. I had to have a gal bladder u/s at 10:30am. I wasn't able to eat anything after midnight the night before. The technician who did my u/s told me to sit in the waiting area until she came back to get me. So I am sitting there reading magazine's. It seemed like forever had passed and no one had come to get me. So then all the sudden I hear over the loud speaker that there is a code red in the x-ray area. Which is where I was. Apparently there was a fire alarm pulled and the siren's were going off like crazy. Everyone was running around and 4 techs happened by where I was waiting. They stop and ask me who I am, why am I there etc??? I was pi$$ed cause I was waiting for a while and then the tech tells me I can leave. UGH, so by the time I work my way out of the hospital to an area where my stupid cell phone works it was almost 1:45. I called my hubby and it took him forever to get there. So needless to say by the time I got out to my car and out of the hospital parking lot it was almost 2:30pm. Since I don't eat anything after 9pm it was now going on 16ish hours since I last ate. I had a massive headache, felt sick to my stomach and just felt like I wanted to sleep. At this point I can't even bring myself to eat because everything tastes gross to me when I am hungry. I knew I had to eat so my hubby stopped at a taco bell and got me some pinot's and cheese. I don't really know how long it was till the feeling passed but for the rest of the day I was pretty tired. This is the only time since i've had my surgery that I had to not eat so this is the first time i've felt this way.
