I guess this is a variable - some doctors recommend three meals a day, some more. I think it depends on your metabolism, what you eat, etc. I've been having to eat more than three times a day to avoid losing too much weight... but it sometimes feels like I'm falling into the trap of grazing and eating small amounts all the time, which is a way to defeat the surgery. So far so good - I'm maintaining my weight pretty consistently - so for now I'll continue more or less as I've been doing. I can't eat enough at one sitting to consume the amount of food I need to maintain my weight if I only eat three meals.

However - I'm still "only" nine months out, so my pouch could stretch even more - so I have to keep my eyes open and make sure I don't fall into bad habits. I intend to try to move towards eating only three meals and maybe a planned snack per day, but only if I can do it without losing too much weight.

Woody,

I'm new to this site and have my surgery scheduled for October 24, 2005. Your information is VERY helpful and informative. Thank you so much. I'm going to print it out and keep on my fridge and at work.

Woody THANKS!! Your article was a great help, it really help me understand my bout w/vomiting. It took me a few days to realize I needed to stop eating solids and go back to soups, I did this for a couple of days and have felt great ever since. I just had a moment, when everything I tasted made me sick and I guess I wasn't giving my stomach/pouch time to heal.

A lot of good information, thanks. I am constantly learning and understanding this surgery and how my body is adjusting to the change.

3. Pre-fill your stomach pouch by “power drinking” just before meals.

I have consulted at least 10 surgeons, and none of them recommend doing this. They all say NOT to drink for 30-45 minutes both BEFORE and AFTER meals. Drinking before fills the pouch, then it doesn't allow you to eat enough. We still need to have a certain amount for food a day to be healthy!

The rest of the post sounds pretty on the nose, except for the 2-3 meals a day.

The power drinking is for people who are at goal. Which comes from the pouch rules for dummies. This does not apply if you are still trying to lose weight.

My PCP suggested that I assemble the food that I would eat for a full meal, then divide it up into 2-3 mini meals.

My doc says 3 meals and day and no more. I asked about 6 small meals, and he responded with "If I want to get the weight off and keep it off, only eat 3 time a day - normal people only need 3 meals a day" He also recommends the water loading after 6 months or at goal, and this is also stated in the Pouch rules for dummies.
