Default allergic reaction to pain meds!

I have not seen any discussions about this and it has been bothering me for years.

Since Ive had GBS I have been allergic to pain meds. Ive had codine, morphine and a few others over the years for various reasons.

What it does is it feels like someone is stabbing me in the stomach with a knife. It is a very intense pain that will not ease up for about a hour.

What I have figured out to do is I crush the pain pill into a powder and mix a 1/4 of the pill with applesauce and eat it. If I dont have a reaction to that I repeat the same process again every hour until I get the whole pill down.

I was in the emergency room a few years ago and the nurse had given me morphine for the pain without my knowledge and I doubled up in pain crying like a baby. I begged my boyfriend to please not let her give me more.
He explained to the nurse what was going on and she said it wasent the pain meds hurting me that I was wrong in what I thought.
He wouldnt allow her to give me more which upset the nurse.

Has anyone had this happen? What do you do for pain meds? I feel like a freak and Im made to feel its all in my mind and pain meds cant possibaly do that to someone. Please let me know if you have any advise!

Thumbs down

Lisa I cannot speak to your stabbing pain but I can caution you on just crushing strong pain meds Oxycodone, vicodin and alike this is a big NO NO. It can give you a very strong high or worse. Be sure to speak with your doctor or Pharmacist before crushing any more pills. Many or designed as time released and shortening that time span can be very bad.

I have been dealing with many of these drugs for the past four years and they should only be taken as directed...

Just be safe

Mrie is a good person to talk to about this.. she has done lots of studying about it. We absorb quicker post WLS so crushing is not a good idea....

I dont feel stabbing, sometimes nausea but thats about it.

WOW!

Thank you for the info. Im sure it wasent the smartest thing to do but at that time I needed pain meds and that was the only way to take them without it hurting.
I promise not to crush any more unless I have my Dr approval (hugs)

Im still wondering if Im the only one that has this issue.......

Lisa:
I don't have that with pain meds, but I do with antibiotics....I can only take one kind now (Cipro). My doctor told me that as I got older, I built up intolerance for antibiotics, and they give me stabbing stomach pains.

Be careful and take care.

I was on chronic pain meds when I had my surgery (Lortab) and my surgeon AND my pharmacist both told me to crush it and my pharmacist even picked out the crusher for me to purchase, so I don't think it will hurt you to crush a pain pill, UNLESS it is specified to be time released and then you will run into a problem. I was talking up to 6 a day and never had a problem. If anything, I was not absorbing the full amount and it actually did not control my pain as well after surgery. I now take Darvocet N 100 daily and I take up to 6 a day and I cut them into 6 pieces because they are horse pills and my surgeon, again, told me to do this.

I know what you're talking about. Most of the time (95%) I have the same exact pain -- and it's due to an empty pouch. If I take the meds (and I do crush / break the pills at the direction of my doctor) on an empty pouch, my pain is gone -- but then replaced with pain in my pouch area.

You may want to try different medicines if taking it with something like applesauce or crackers doesn't help. Certain meds cause the pain for me no matter what -- hence the 95%.

Hope this helps.
