OK, Am I really going to go bald?
Hello everyone I am new on here and I was just reading a thread and everyone was saying their hair is falling out in clumps, and the one person said she is going bald??!!! Is this true? Am I going to go bald? I haven't had the surgery I am going thru all the pre op tests. Please let me know, if I can expect to go bald or not.....

Chances are no. You will definately lose some hair... a lot maybe... it will drive you nuts... but it will grow back. You have to keep up on your protein in order to help lessen the effect. Keep in mind, all major surgery kills off hair folicles... it's just that post op it's much harder to get in adequate nutrition to promote new growth. Also at least these days they have all those wonderful extensions and stuff! I'm actually going to have a hair cut tomorrow to try and deal with all the crazy new hair growth versus the stuff that's thin and long! You'll be okay darlin!

I will admit, I am losing some hair, but if you do your protein and vitamins you will only lose a little bit of hair. It might seem like a lot, but it isn't. It's not that big of a deal and it usually subsides after a few months.

Looking at the amount of hair that comes out, you have to believe that when you look in the mirror, there just won't be any hair left, but there is. No one has noticed except my hairdresser and no one else is quite that involved with my hair. DH doesn't even see that there is a difference! (men) And actually, like Robin said, there is a point that it starts to come back. I'm there at about 7 months - so it is temporary and not as bad as it feels.

I lost a significant amount, but no clumps, just thinning. Personally, it has made my hair more manageable. No one noticed but my husband as he was finding hair in the shower drain, and my hairdresser.

Gina, I don't know your health history or your reasons for looking into wls, but when you weigh the health benefits of wls against a little hair loss--chances are you'll agree to put up with it. I have thin, baby fine, blondish hair and already lose quite a bit due to PCOS so I really struggled with this decision. However, knowing that parts of my PCOS, my high blood pressure, sleep apnea, high cholesterol, GERD and insulin resistance would either be completely or partially resolved by wls, I just couldn't make a vain decision to keep my hair over my health. So, I'm now 1 week post-op and doing my best to get as much protein in my new pouch as possible and taking my vitamins like my hair depends on it!
Good luck in your journey!

Oh boy, you probably read one of MY posts! Lol. Well, I'm sorry I don't mean to alarm anyone(specially the pre-ops) when I complain about my hair loss among other things. Yes, hair loss is something MOST wls people experience but I (don't think - since I don't really know and never heard of such a case) that anyone has lost every single strand of hair! As long as there's "one" little strand of hair plugged into your pretty little scalp you're technically not completely bald. Hee hee, seriously though. I'm a totally different case. There was a point where I couldn't really eat for weeks at a time and then it escalated to not being to even drink water or my own supplements, I couldn't keep anything down! I noticed that ever since THAT time it was when my hair started falling in clumps(inches at a time, yes). Lucky for me, I went into this with a full head of thick hair(like most hispanic women, I had the whole long brown wavy thick hair that I used to complain about all the time...). I don't look like I've gone through chemo by any means but I can no longer put my hair into a ponytail since I'm "balding" like a man lol(the front sides are going first, just like my dad...I should've known) so I just leave it down and you can barely tell. One good thing though, like Dyann said(I think), it's a lot more manageable! Now I don't spend 3+ hours blowdrying and flat ironing. I did it under an hour the last time I washed my hair! YaY!!!

I have heard the Biotin helps - found in the vitamin aisle. I am not to that stage yet - but thought I'd pass on what I've heard. I actually bought some too - I'll start taking it right away with my other vitamins. Good Luck to you!

Starting right away is a great idea, you know what they say "it's hard to stop a moving train"...or something along those lines...you get what I'm saying though lol. My dad bought me some biotin from one of the online stores in the wls surgery booklet they gave me at cleveland. I've been using it for two weeks now and nothing, but it's not like I was expecting to sprout like a Chia Pet or something...
