Red face Broken foot ...

Hi all. Well, I went and did it this time. Yes, I broke my right foot. For several months now I have been having mild to moderate pain with slight swelling and slight redness on this foot. Went to PCP several times, even had two x-rays weeks apart...all said no fracture...and no arthritis. Finally PCP referred me to Podiatry. The appt was supposed to be 2/12/07.

Tuesday morning, at work, we had a"stat" call and I was walking pretty fast down the hallway and all of a sudden my right foot kinda snapped. The next step on the right side landed me flat out on the floor. The nurse behind me (also hearing the snap) was shocked...she didn't know who to treat...the patient or me! I insisted she go to the stat call. Well, after being taken to ER, they diagnosed two fractures. One on the metatarsal, the other being the cuboid bone. The Ortho MD says the snap we heard was the cuboid breaking. AND, he thinks the metatarsal was previously fractured and I most likely re-fractured it. Hmmmmm, why didn't MY PCP pick the old fracture up?

They are making me wear a 'boot' at all times, except for sleep. And, of course, crutches I see a Orthopedic Surgeon Tuesday. They wont do any surgery (if needed) until the swelling is down.

To complicate matters, I was injured at work, so I saw 'their' Doctors...they were great, Thank God. However, due to the previous visits to my PCP, part of this may be considered an existing condition. I know nothing about insurance stuff and know this is going to get very, very complicated. (Workers Comp vs. my HMO)

For now I elevate the foot whenever I can...even with the boot. If I walk, I use the crutches...sometimes just one crutch works fine. At first the boot scared the hell out of our cats! I will keep you updated on my saga.

I am SO, SO sorry but you seem to be in good spirits about the whole ordeal. I hope you aren't in too much pain. But with walking as part of your job - what a pain. And I hope the cats are calming down...

I am still recovering from your "snap" ooohhh - feels like I was there - YUCK!

Aww Karen. God bless your heart. I know this may seem off but thank God this happen on your floor where there was other nurse and not while you were out and about by yourself. It could have ended up worse. Everything will work it self out. Stay off that foot. I hope you get better soon.
