Question has this happened to you

I am 5wks post-op the first two wks i really had a hard time getting my fluids in but after that I didn't seem to be having any issues with it but now whenever i try to drink water i get in about a cup (still sipping) and I start burping and my stomach feels so full and gassy that i have no desire to eat or drink anything else. I do seem to be able to get down hot drinks or apple juice without any problems

Hmm I know it was hard for me to drink at first. I really had to think about every sip to ensure that I was not swallowing any air. Just a little bit of air is a big problem for a baby pouch. I am sure it will pass in time.

Do what feels right now if hot drinks work better then drink them as long as you get your liquids in. Try having your drinks at room temp. I remember that really cold drinks did not feel good at all.

Good luck

Holly gives good advice. Water is a very dense liquid, and even denser when it is cold. If having it hot works better, then do that. Figure out the best way for YOU to get your liquids in....

water was hard for me for a long time too! sip sip sip, and if warmer works for you, do that! Propel worked pretty well for me also. Like Holly & Robin said, do what works for you, and watch the air in your sips. No need to get extra gassy and take it s l o w!

Default This may be an "old wives tale"..

...but I've heard you take in less air when you use a straw?

Are you tolerating solids okay? You've gotten good ideas but the other thing that I would be on alert for is the possiblity of a stricture developing. You are at the prime time for that. If you are tolerating solids, no worry but if not? I would draw my surgeon's attention to the problems you are having with liquid.

Hi Holly

I've heard the same about straws but have no idea why they say this. Any idea? I never remember to ask the doctor.
Thanks!

I went through stages, as most do, but I couldn't do crystal lite for many months after surgery. I also was very gassy and burpy, but I found that I was drinking too fast or too much at one time. Slow small sips throughout the day (outside of meal time).

You progressively get better with time, be patient.

As long as you are getting in fluids and food, its good. Once you can't get in liquids or food, then it needs to be addressed.
