Default Need help sleeping

I have been on Ambien for 4 years to help me sleep and have tried several other meds( lunesta, restoril, rozeram( spelling) as well but since surgery the ambien isnt working like it used to. It puts me to sleep really quick , I would say about 5 minutes after taking it but 30 minutes later I am wide awake and wired. My surgeon was concerned I had been on it so long considering its for short term usage and quite addictive I might add ( I feel like a crackhead if I am out ) lol and I HATE that feeling .
I am looking for something that would be ok for longterm use if needed. Anyone have any suggestions? My sleep apnea test came back normal ( lot of loud snoring ) but other than that I was ok. I havent slept for more than 3 hours at a time in years . I'm hoping that when I get alot of the weight off I will be able to rest easier.

I am the exact same way. I have not had a decent nights sleep (unless drug or alcohol induced) (not illegal drugs...LOL) since I was 6. I have been tested, been on all kinds of meds, and nothing works for me. They attributted it to my weight and tell me once I loose it I should sleep just fine. Good luck. I wish I had some advice for you.

I have had sleep problems for most of my life as well. I take Trazedone for it. It is an anti-depressant with a side effect of making you sleep. I know that I was was prescribed it, as I am already taking Zoloft. I dont really know if they prescribe it for people if they are not already on an anti-depressant, but mught be worth asking

I hope you soon can get a good nights sleep!!

I had a horrible sleep problem after surgery. MichelleJC did also. I tried everything. TWO ambiens did it after a while. BUT, the problem just kind of went away eventually. It has something to do with the hormonal changes and lasting effects of anesthesia. Right now I take trazadone and it's a life saver. I took it years ago and am glad to have my old friend there for me when I need it. lol
Good luck.

I just take Melatonin to get to sleep...it's a natural med that doesn't give you the groggy morning feeling and isn't addictive. So, it's safe for long term use. I use the 5mcg caplets and take about two a night....they work better for me than any perscription. Guess it's a matter of what works for you.

I would not recommend Xanax. It is addicting as well and my clinic does not precribe it for sleep. Have you tried Trazodone?

Thanks everyone for you suggestions .. I think I will ask for trazadone and see if it helps. I have tried Valerian Root and Melatonin as well . I just don't want that addicitive feeling again that I had with ambein if that makes sense
