Is it that time of year, or what?
This was on my mind, too, of late. I allowed my family to crowd out other friendships during the last eight years while we lived in Texas. I haven't been open to new friendships AT ALL since I got out of college in 1998. But now that I've moved, and there's no family to spend weekend time with, I find that I miss it enormously. I adore my husband, but I guess I do need more than just spending time with him.
However, other than this board, I have exactly one girlfriend who has stood the test of time, who lives in Montana, and one male friend who lives in Michigan. I haven't seen Barb in a year and a half, and haven't seen Jeff in six years! I'm really hoping my new job leads to new relationships. One of my New Year's resolutions will be to re-open my life to friendships while not being needy.

I am one of the ones who does not have friends. I have lots of aquaintences at work and in our town, but no girlfriend. My husband is "my girlfriend" and I don't believe that is healthy. Never really been one to have lots of friends, although I believe I have the ability to - just not sure I can "give" my time to a friend like I should..make sense?
In so many ways, you are all my girlfriends.....

Now y'all got me thinking (that can be dangerous!). I know SOOOOO many people, and talk to them all the time, but there are three people that are true friends...you know those who will drop what they're doing to help in a crisis..and that you'll do the same. These are my hubby, and my two best friends. I like it this way, and it terrifies me that we might be moving to Buffalo where I only know his family. It took me over 10 years to cultivate the friendships I have with these 2 ladies and a lot of work. I have never had any family close to me, and so I would sort of adopt my friends and their family as my family for holidays and such.

I think we all go through the daily routine making really good aquaintances, but life is so busy that it is hard to cultivate lasting true friendships at this point. All of my GOOD friends are old friends. YOu have to worry about spouses and kids getting along etc.
Most of us have outgoing personalities. We had to be fun and nice to compensate for the MO. WE are a great group of people, no wonder we all like it here at this forum. There are also no obsticles or demands placed on us by this forum either. Everyone who is here, wants to be here.

good friends are worth their weight in gold
I am so blessed to have the dear friends I have, having only lived here for 6 1/2 years. Dwelling in a quasi-underground life makes finding like minded people more difficult, so we are pretty proactive--most of my friends here I made in Lesbian Support/Social groups. Got a few from working, got bunches by being a Callery/Potts kid.
Just this afternoon I talked on the phone with my childhood best friend for life, closer than sisters, TIGHT friends since we were 6 years old. She sent me a Christmas card, and I had too much to say, so I called her. It was as if it had been maybe 6 months since we hung out instead of 20 years. I last saw her 5 years ago. When I told her I was down to 114 lbs, I said how old do you think it's been since I weighed that? Without hesitating she said "I think 8."
It's too bad there aren't support groups for straight women who just want good friends.
