Boston company will test nasal spray treatment for obesity

Compellis Pharmaceuticals of Boston said it has been issued an initial patent for a nasal spray that aims to treat obesity by blocking the senses of smell and taste.

"It seems so simple - blocking the sense of smell and taste," company chief executive Chris Adams wrote in an e-mail. "But it has never been used to treat obesity, and it really does work. Our bodies do not crave what we cannot smell or taste."

Compellis said it has demonstrated the effectiveness of its treatment in tests with animals and hopes to begin testing on people next year.

The US Patent and Trademark Office has granted Compellis "the initial patent in a series of patent applications covering the platform technology" behind its treatment, the company said.

Compellis calls its potential product CP404 and describes it as a "calcium channel blocker used in a nasal formulation to block olefactory activity and reduce food intake."

If I wasn't already approved for this surgery and was still trying everything out there... I am sure I would be on the boat for that as well. As with most of the other non-surgical fixes for MO I am sure people will lose, but when they try to return to a normal they will probably gain it back.

Do I really want to be normal?? Having some body issues. Don't want to be too thin.

My aunt lost both her senses of smell and taste when she got hit by a car years ago... she's still overweight. I don't see how this spray would work anyway, cause if you already know how something smells and/or tastes, you would still crave it anyway. I can just be standing around talking to my husband and all of a sudden it's like I start drooling cause I get a wicked craving for hot dogs. I can taste them in my mouth and I can smell them in my mind. This spray won't work.

Sorry to sound like such a wet blanket on this one.

i agree with cindy

gimmick, money stealers

anyway, i cant smell cake now and i am craving it

i think once we know how things are and what we like, we will crave it, maybe if my mom used it on me at birth i wouldnt know how good anything tastes...but i remember how good cake was before sugery, i still crave it, just not stupid enough to eat it cuz i know it will make me sick, so thankful for this tool, it is the only thing that has helped me in choosing healthy foods.

For just about forever I've said that if I lost my sense of smell I'd probably lose weight. There are times that we'll be walking out of a restaurant, groaning from overeating, and I'll smell something and instantly want it even though I'm almost sick from gorging myself.

Like Rachel said, if I wasn't so close, I might wanna give this a try and even if it temporarily worked, as soon as you stopped using it, you'd gain everything and more back.
