Barb, I'm so sorry for everything you went through. I totally sympathize with you though.

About two weeks ago at about three in the morning I started having this horrendous pain on my lower right side. My dad was working and my mom is pretty much there for decoration so I had to call 911 since I couldn't drive. They took me to the nearest hospital(instead of the hospital where I had the gastric bypass) because I was in too much pain. They did a CT Scan and found out I had a stone. On the meanwhile they had also done some blood tests and they noticed that my potassium was really low. The doctor from that hospital told me that it was really dangerous for it to be that low and left, came back with this huge potassium pill. I mean, the thing was probably bigger than a quarter. I was like, Ummm...I can't swallow that. He's like sure you can, you're twenty years old, you're a big girl. That totally pissed me off. I told him that when I came into the ER the first thing I did was tell everyone that came into my room that I was a gastric bypass patient and had only had it done about a month a week ago. He left and then came back with some fizzy orangey stuff that supposedly was the same as the pill and even though it tasted like ass I had to drink it. Now, he told me that I should start drinking a lot of orange juice and eating lots of bananas so that my potassium can become regular again. Once again I told him I couldn't do that. He's all like why? Well, orange juice has sugar in it, I will dump. And I'm not allowed to have bananas just yet, I'm not in that phase of my diet!. By the time I got out of that ER I was furious. It was really frustrating to me that a doctor could be so ignorant to MY specific needs. It's not like they don't perform this specific surgery in this hospital because they do. He should know a little more about it. And then on top of it all, he would question everything I would tell him and make comments like I didn't know what I was talking about.

I've also had similar experiences with my PCP and my urologist. It gets me down at the same time because I feel like I'm this abnormal person and nobody understands what I'm going through, my needs and my pains.

Barb,
Sorry you had to go through this...but I have to say that I had so many different hospitals treat me the same darn way and it makes me angry. I had so many different surgeries since gbs and each time, I ended up eating crackers and drinking water because no one would listen to me...when I said sugar free, I meant it. I had to complain to higher up people to get it through their heads. I have been in numerous hospitals and surgery centers and people are just ignorant. I remember having to do the barium swallow where they mixed the stuff with Apple Juice. I argued with everyone that I would dump and they didn't give a darn. They said I HAD to drink it. It took me 1 hour to drink just one of the cups and I was dying...they finally decided it was enough and took me in for the CAT scan. I complained to everyone. I have complained so many times...turning my face blue.

I think a letter would be good. No one should be treated this way. WE know what our diet consists of and know what is best for us. I always crack up when these nutritionists come in and tell us what to eat.

I am glad that you are ok. Such a scary thing to happen to you especially since you are still recovering from gbs. Get well soon.

Wow,,,I am surprised to hear that this is happening in our hospitals in this day and age,,,what is going on? GBS is so common now that you'd think these people would get it right and know how to treat our needs....There has to be something that can be done to get our medical world up to date on what our needs are...I am going to start making some phone calls Monday morning and if any of you have more suggestions or ideas on what I can do,,please post them...One voice isn't enough,,,there needs to be more of us doing something so that when accidents do happen to us and we are taken to a hospital not familiar with us we can be worry free and know that our medical needs will be met just as if we were diabetic or had other ailments...
Thanks for listening you guys,,,,and to answer on of the posts,,,yes, I am walking My head is still pounding from the concussion and I am really weak and tired,,but I am doing ok...My husband took me out of the house today so that was a nice change...Monday is going to be so hard to return back to work,,,I feel like I haven't had time to recoop yet, but I will manage...Prayers people,,,lots of prayers please :-)

I think your experience puts our week of hell to shame. Wow. You must be at your wits end. I am glad you are doing well. If you can get through this, you can get through anything. Did you get your vaccinations prior to leaving the hospital after the splenctomy??? I am sure the next few weeks will bring along better times.
