Default Company Holiday Party-What to eat?

OK, my husband's company has a beautiful holiday party every year, and I will be about 6-7 weeks out from WLS at this year's party. It is 1 hour of cocktails, then a sit-down dinner, then after dinner awards & dancing. The menu choices are macadamia nut crusted halibut or filet mignon. I know I can't eat the filet. They said they would be happy to special order something for me. I am afraid of the macadamia nut crusted halibut, I have never been a fish eater, so I know I have to learn how to eat fish now.

Should I ask for plain grilled halibut & veggies? Since I can't have salad, can I have soup for the 1st course (I know, just a spoonful)? Any menu suggestions? I am 2 weeks out now, and can hardly eat anything - yogurt, soup, protein drinks & low-fat cheese, bacon & an egg are about it. Oh yeah, & 5 Wheat Thins!

I have tried to eat some shredded chicken, & mashed potatoes, but they make me feel icky & as soon as I have a bite or two I can't stand the look or thought of it.

I am absolutely not keping my WLS a secret from anyone, so I don't have to worry about coming up with some excuse as to why I am not eating at the party.

Thanks!
ann

You know, at about 4 weeks post-op I was permitted to eat soft foods. The filet is a very tender cut, and I tried that type of meat the 5th week, I believe. My surgeon prefers people don't puree their food, but rather learn to purree it with their mouth! As long as you chew it to an applesauce consistancy you should be fine. VERY tiny bites, of course.. and you'll probably only be able to eat 1 oz of it [with veggies and starch]. I would ask your dietician or surgeon, though. Every one is different.

I was fine with a filet mignon at that stage...just chew well. But if they are willing to make you something special, just order what you like. When I have functions, I just keep to simple protein sources, salad and I do fine. You may want to consider brining your own drinks. When I go, everything is carbonated or full sugar juice, so I bring a low carb drink and put in a glass with ice, nobody knows the difference.

Key thing....try filet mignon about 4 days before you go, if you choose that option, that way you will know if you can handle it at the party.

I am going to families for Christmas and you wouldn't believe how much bottled water and other liquids I am packing with me, not to mention the bag of kashi bars, protein bars and protein drinks!

Just a quick suggestion...stay away from the soup if it is really rich. I was months out from surgery and had a soup that was high in fat and got really ill. I always did well with French Onion (without the crouton). YUM!
