Why do they use staples?
I don't know if this question has ever been asked before, but why do they use staples in this surgery? Do they have too? my friend just had it and her staples just looked so rough and left such a weird mark on her belly. When I had my gallbladder removed last year which I thought was a similar surgery as far as the size of the holes and so forth they didn't use staples, not sure if they just used stitches or what, but I have such small little scars on my stomach from that, I am just worried about the scarring afterwards, and it seems like it would be painful to remove the staples as in just pulling out stitches.. can someone enlighten me on this? Thanks so much.

I had Lap, and other than the internal 'staples' which aren't what you would think are typical staples....I didn't have external ones. They simply put bandaids over the holes where the scopes and tube were. They have since healed up and are barely noticable. Now they may use staples with the open procedure, but I am not familar with that one. IF your concerend call your Dr. and ask.

It totally depends on the surgeon. My surgeon doesn't use staples on the inside...but he does close the outside holes with staples (I had LAP). I had staples on the outside with my gallbladder surgery 6 years ago and the scars disappeared...so I am hoping it happens again with these scars. Not that it matters with all the dang stretch marks.

oh ok, they looked like they would be painful.. so that helps hearing that.. but it just seems so oldfashioned to still be using staples.. oh well.. .if it isn't broke i guess don't fix it, right?

My surgeon doesn't use staples on the outside either. There were only steri-strips and bandaides. We do use staples a lot on the burn unit where I work and even though they look nasty they really don't leave large scars.

I had open and had staples - 38 to be exact! The staples left scars all the way down my incision. My mom had open heart surgery this year and her scar is as long as mine, but they stitched it up and you can barely see it.
I think it really comes down to the doctor - their preference. For me the scar is no big deal. I had lap gallbladder removal and you can see the scar from the stitches more than you can see the incisions.
I won't be wearing a bikini at any time, so nobody but my family sees it. When I have a panni, the scar is from the breastbone to the pubic bone and then hip to hip. Apparently over 120 stitches when I have this!

Wow, I never even knew some did that. Mine was also just like bandages and a big piece of clear plastic covering it all.

I had staples for my incision-thus the "zipper" look
