Cherry~
I may be wrong but I thought they did that when the person was super duper MO...not sure but I know it is even more evasive than the RNY.
Google it.

In addition, I think thats a decision your surgeon makes, not you? Could be wrong. My surgeon only does RnY.

Van, is right, that is something that they tend to do for those who are severely morbidly obese. It is a more radical surgery that causes a greater amount of malabsorption. One thing they are beginning to do though is a variation of it. It is a gastric sleeve. You see, occasionally the Duodenal Switch is a two step process. With the first surgery they do the gastric sleeve and with the second, further down the line, they do the actual duodenal switch. According to my surgeon's office they are finding some excellent results with just the sleeve and there are times the surgeon opts to not go back and do the Duodenal Switch. They honestly are feeling that eventually the gastric sleeve may be the present RNY as the prefered surgery to do.

Educate yourself about all of the surgeries before making a decision.

Tammy, it isn't totally a decision your surgeon makes. It often comes out of a discussion between surgeon and patient. I know the surgeons in the office I went through offer it as an option. They discuss all the different options with their patients, but they don't leave it totally up to patients choice. It is pretty much a joint decision between patient and physician. There are 2 surgeons out of 3 in my surgeon's office that do them and actually are training right now to be able to do them lap.

Two words, Anal Leakage! That is one of the side affects of Duodneal Switch. I discarded that choice the first time I red about that.

ICK!!

I stuck with the RNY...less complication rate, and fewer side effects. Plus, my surgeon said I wasn't a candidate for it..he reserves that for BMI of 50 or higher and other special considerations.

Good luck!

I looked at my options and that was one of them. I choose the RNY over 3 or 4 choices that I had. One based on having my surgeon reasonably close, RNY is much more common and there are more stats available on RNY and the fact that I was at a BMI of 47. I agree with the other, I was concerned about the malabsorbtion issues with DS. We hear about the more drastic WL with DS, but unless you fall into the super obese category, I didn't feel the risks were worth it. Its really a personal decision and talk with your regular doctor and or surgeon and they can help you make the best choice for you.

I would be concerned about travelling far away from my doctor and not having anyone around who can help if you have complications.

Default Lap DS

There is a doctor in Marietta, GA that does the DS laporscopically. Dr. Dennis Smith. He supposedly was one of the first to do so and has done quite a few this way.
