Halloween is coming... What about the candy????
Hey everyone,
With Halloween almost here, it has me thinking about the candy. I was talking to my kids about Halloween and how the candy is so bad for them (and me!) and that may be we could try something different this year (may be a carnival...). So they could have fun and still get a few pieces of candy. Not surprisingly, they were not into the idea! So I'm feeling like a mean mommy if I dont' take them trick or treating, but I have four kids, so when you multiply all the candy there is loads. It fills my cauldron, that I use to pass out candy, and when I fill it for trick or treating with about 4 large bags of candy, it doesn't even fill that thing, so you know my kids are adding a lot of candy to the mix. I always throw out the crap candy, but we are always left with Kit Kat bars and Twix, Snickers, Reeses PB Cups............ You know all the good stuff !!! So now that my appetite has come back and I have had to use will power around things like that, I am frightend by the thought of all this Halloween candy laying around. Any of you moms or dads out there have a good idea, so that my kids can still have candy and eat it too!!! .

There are different ways to look at this situation. For me, I am not changing anything with my daughter and Halloween practices. I had the surgery, she didn't. I know the candy is not good for her, and I can limit how much of it she eats on a day to day basis, but I want her to be able to go out with her friends and do the normal thing. As a family we are eating more healthy, but I didn't want to change things with them so much. Birthdays were hard on me early out too, and I realized that I need to continue with tradition and make the cakes. I just choose not to have any.
I think for me, its all about control. We are constantly surrounded by food and we have to be strong not to cave into eating things that are not good.
For you......tell yourself that "for you" the candy is not good, that its ok for others to have it, but it gives you no nutritional value and you have worked so hard, and come so far to give into the candy. Focus on the events of the night, going out vs. the candy, which is just a part of the night.
I haven't tried anything like this yet, but I know if I did and didn't get sick on it, that it would be an issue for me....I just don't want to go there. Kinda like potato chips....my weakness...I don't buy them for the house, if my family wants them, they get a small bag and I might try one....( I shouldn't) but I have...I guess having only one is much better than eating the whole bag.

I'm not changing anything with my kids trick or treating...but I have heard of some people telling their kids that if they leave their Halloween candy on the porch when they go to sleep that the Great Pumpkin will come and replace it with a gift that they have wanted...just an idea.

One more thing I remembered....when I was a kid I spent one Halloween in the hospital having my tonsils out...my friends shared their candy with me. The next year, I took a bunch of my candy to the local hospital to share with the kids who couldn't go out. I didn't really need 2 pillowcases of candy...I still remember sharing that to this day.

I don't have kids, and when hubby and I aren't out at a party or something, we stay home and pass out the normal sized candy bars - all of the kids love our house. We don't have plans yet this year and I feel like a hypocrite advocating for MO people to become non-MO...and passing out candy to kids...some of whom are on their way to being obese. On the flip side of the original question asked, what words of wisdom can my sisters and brothers here offer?

I don't change anything with my kids either...well I throw out the yuckky candy, of course "my version" of yuckky candy i'm sure my kids wouldn't agree with me, but whatever lol
and kit kats? Mmmmm...I love them, especially the orange halloween ones with chocolate wafer inside.
Yep, I can still eat all that stuff....the difference is that I will eat one of those little bars compared to buying a whole bag to myself lol
I don't get sick on sugar at all...not even potato chips...Ketchup being my favorite from Pennsylvania, not as good as Lays from Canada, but again instead of the whole bag, i'm fine with 4 or 5 chips, because I have the willpower to stop now.
In fact when I was in the middle of losing weight my downfall was Jelly Belly's I coud eat those for-ever and the next day i'd lost like 3lbs.
My metabolism now is through the roof, however my diet is quite boring, a lot of cottage cheese and yogurt lol, but it's nice to know I can have a treat every so often. Except ice cream, it kills me!

I like that idea of taking it to the hospital! I will have to look into that. That would be memorable for my kids too! Thanks ladies
I think I will toss out the bad stuff, donate some and let them have some for treats. I will just have to hide it from them, and me too I have one child that if I don't keep a close eye on, will be headed for obesity too. So I have to make some changes with my kids eating habits. My doctor says, I do have to let them have a treat here and there, or my child that is tetering(sp?) will overindulge and no doubt see obesity. Thanks again!

We make ours disappear
My son isn't a candy freak and eats none except for holloween and candy-canes at christmas. But he does have a very bad memory. My husband and I have been "helping" him with his candy for years, while limiting him to 3 or 4 items a day. (Of course, a full size bar would count as 4!) This year, I'm just going to throw a few things out every few days, since even the smell of candy makes me gag now.
We also once put his candy bag up on a high shelf, and after four days, he totally forgot about it. I tossed the whole thing right before thanksgiving.
There are so many ways to deal with it, but I will say - the hospital idea is excellent!

Oh wow, last year wasn't so bad because I really didn't eat much yet. This year will be harder. But I won't change it either. My daughter doesn't have a weight problem and actually doesn't like chocolate that much. I guess for me, there's my answer. I let her give most of her chocolate away, since that is what tempts me most.....and the stuff she keeps I can live peacefully with most days. When I crave candy I use tootsie pops like Dale does and it helps me without too many calories.
