Default I had a regret!

I always enjoy seeing other "post-opers" in the clinic waiting room, and let me tell you, we're obvious, just by how our clothes fit, baggy butts, flapping thighs - oh and the looks of comparisons.

As I was sitting - waiting for my Dr. to call upon me this past Tues., I overheard an older lady ask me if I had bypass. I said Yes, back in July and this is when it all started - the talk!

We started to compare notes. She had lapband, I had RNY, she had surgery 7 months back and lost 35 lbs, I had surgery two months back and lost 40 lbs etc.. etc...

As we were hashing over our notes, a younger lady sat right down next to me in amazement. She wanted in our conversation - and I let her. She was going in for her first consultation - her first one that day. She admitted that she was so scared - and wanted to know about it all (the surgery) in an instant.

As we continued to talk about our do's and don'ts, and frustrations, I was called in to my appointment. My celebrity moment was done!!!!

Later that night - my regret hit. I should've gave my phone number to the scared gal - to help her along. I didn't think until it was too late. How could I have turned my back on her - a person so scared and having no one to support her? Shame on me!!!

But, I have to remember, she's gonna have a great bypass team behind her - that's the Godsend.

By the way, I'm doing fantastic in my weight loss - my two month appointment went well.

Goodness, if that's your only REGRET...your DOING AWESOME!!!

You know, you could always attend group support meetings, then you would be able to share your wisdom with any of the 'newbies' that show up. I wouldn't beat yourself up too much about not lending a hand at the time...you were pressed for time and not there for support, but an appt. I bet that young lady appreciated the info you were able to give her in the time you had!!

Congrats on your 40#'s gone forever!!

does your doc offer a monthly support group? If so you might run into her there, you should also give her the forum address if you happen to run into her.

My gastric bypass team does offer a support group - but....I've moved. I'm now 275 miles from my Dr. and his team.

I did give the forum address to my Dr. and to my dietician. I tend to give them good advice everytime I meet with them.

I think that the best feeling that I get is when I can help others through the decision making and their journey. I remember being the scared pre-op sitting uncertain. I had a few people take me under their wings and that was it.

Don't worry about not giving your phone number out...there will always be another that you can do that for. I am sure of it. I remember perfect strangers giving me their number, email, etc. and it was something that I knew I would do, too.

Just the thought alone is awesome...support is a Godsend.

The beauty of the situation is, next time you'll remember to offer! I love your description of us recent post oppers, it made me literally laugh out loud, as I sit here with my baggy butt, saggy thigh pants...it's so nice that they're not tight anymore!
