The news is good for my daughter!
Just to let all of you know my daughter got a call from her Gyn nurse tonight. Though they are still pretty vague about what is exactly causing the change in her cervical cells the good news is it ISN'T Cervical Cancer. What she explained is that it is a "mild virus" and they were able to destroy most of the bad cells but "what is left from this virus should just get better on its own."
Though she and I are both thrilled that it isn't cervical cancer they seem to be really contradicting themselves with this explaination. They had told her earlier that there were "severe" abnormalities in her cells now they are making it sound like it was all something rather mild. They have told her in the past that she doesn't have HPV but though they didn't say this was HPV they kind of indicated that it was since my daughter had asked them about the vaccine, tonight and they said "it wouldn't get rid of HPV but possibly make it less severe."
I've encouraged her to find a new GYN which she says she is. Our PCP is fantastic so she is planning on talking to him about all of this to get straight answers about any future monitoring of this "virus". I'm just not trusting this doctor at all. Way too many vague answers for my comfort and hers.
But anyway, like I said it isn't cervical cancer so I am giving a huge sigh of relief. Thank you all for your words of support. It has been SO appreciated. I think we are on the down side of these extremely stressful weeks.

I am happy to hear you got some good news on your daughters results.... It is such a scary thing... My 19 yr old daughter had to go through the leep procedure also, due to HPV. No cancer yet, but they will have to watch it. She had to have a pap every 3 months for a yr, the first 3 came back clear, then the 4th showed abnormal cells again--- It is very frightning when they haven't had childern yet. Our Gyn said that stress can flare up the virus also. but once you have the virus there is no sense in getting the vaccination. Glad to hear you are feeling better too.......

Beth,
I'm glad your daughter's test results came back good. It probably is a good idea for your daughter to find a doctor that communicates a little better with her.
I found out I had abnormal cancerous cells during my preparation for wls! I had colposcopy first then the LEEP just like your daughter. I went for a check up to be cleared for wls on Thurs. and had wls the following Mon. Nothing like cutting it close. I just went back for a check up, all seems ok, I'll go again in 6 months.
I think it's easier that it was me and not my daughter, you know how we mom's are.
I'm sending you both love and good thoughts.

It definitely sounds like she needs a new GYN. As a nurse yourself, you know how wishy washy they sound! Get her a 2nd opinion!!
The HPV vaccine can only be used before contracting HPV. It's a preventative thing, not a cure. I had HPV and the leep myself and required FREQUENT paps for 2 years. Make sure she gets a new GYN that requires this for her even if it is just "another" virus. I still don't like that answer! (Sorry, it's the nurse in me. lol) Hang in there. Keep us posted. I"ll be thinking of the two of you.

I'm with you on that one, Michelle! I guess we nurses tend to think alike. *l*
My daughter agrees that she feels the doctor and his office just didn't handle this in the manner she wants for herself. They never really explained much of anything to her and the doctor himself never even spoke to her, only the nurses and the nurse practitioner. I thought I had read that the HPV vaccine could only be used before you contracted HPV. They haven't said what this virus was that she has. But they also didn't say it wasn't HPV. I told her to call the office again today and request that they send her results to her PCP. I have the same PCP and have an appointment with him next Tuesday so I'm curious what he may have to say about all of this. He is such an extremely thorough physician and was kind enough to personally call her before the LEEP to explain things to her. She had called his office kind of freaking out because she wasn't getting much communication from the GYN. She just started seeing this PCP so it means alot to me that he went out of his way to talk to her. He is an internist not a gyn. but he does all of my pap smears so I'm hoping he will be willing to just follow her for follow-up or if not she would like him to recommend someone to her. She said she will go to the 4 month follow-up with the gyn she has now but then she is looking elsewhere! I most certainly can't blame her. As I said way too many wishy-washy answers for my liking.

Audeen, Joanne and Trina-thank you for your words of support. It does seem so much harder and frustrating when it is your daughter. As a nurse myself it makes me rather upset with the way this whole matter has been handled. I think they were right to do the procedure and suspect it was handled properly but I really feel she needs a second opinion. This just isn't something where vague answers are okay! *l* sorry, just my little soap-box. I can't stand doctors or nurses that don't explain things, thoroughly.
Well thank you all again. You are such a wonderful and caring group of people!
