Post op pain control
As I have been reading all the posts I have realized there are a lot of pain control meds out there. Could some of you share what drugs you used post op for pain and how well or not well they worked for you? I know "they" say after GBS we are not supposed to take NSAIDs and because I use motrin three times a day for knee and shoulder arthrits pain I'm nervous about what I will do.....????? If I remember correctly there have even been some posts from people who DO use NSAIDs? Is this wishful thinking or do I remember that correctly?
Thanks for all of your input......this board is such a great place to feel like you are among people who know what it's all about.
How do I create the "automatic" signature like everyone else has?

Hi Jan, it's nice to see you found us. Welcome! About pain control after surgery, there is a thread that we have started named "Postop Pain". If you read that, you will get all the info you need about the pain med and what everyone is using. Also, I had daily pain too with my knees, hips, ankles, back, you name it, it hurt. I think alot was because of the weight I was carrying and I, too, took NSAIDs frequently. But I also used a natural anti-inflammatory cream that I got from a nutrition store that seemed to help ease the pain also. There is also MSM, glucosamine, and chondroitin. I believe all of it is for joint and arthritis pain. I know you have to take it on a continuous basis, but I believe they make it in a liquid so you could take it post-op also. It might be worth checking with the local nutrition store to find out. Most are very helpful. As far as anti-inflammatories, I would never take one post-op because they can cause ulcers, which I now have post-op, and I would not wish this in ANYONE! So take very good care of your pouch. Too much could happen to it to hurt it.

I am assuming that you mean after the surgery down the road... for daily aches and pains...because they give you what you need for your pain after surgery. As to daily aches and pains to be honest I just don't really have any anymore. I think that in the 7 months since surgery I have taken 4 tylenol. That was for headaches. I was told acetaminaphen was ok but ibufrofen is not. Hope this helps.
As to the signature look up on the bar and see user CP that is where you make it.

Trina, thanks for all the good solid info. I will check out the thread you suggested. What is the name of the anti inflammatory cream you used? I am already on the glucosamine and chondroitin combo.....what is MSM???

http://www.1backpain.com/all_about_g...ne_and_msm.htm There is a link for MSM. Read the paragragh titled MSM and the one under it. It speaks about arthritis pain and MSM. I can't remember the brand name of the cream, but it comes in a round, white, plastic jar and it has "arthritis pain" written on it in blue. I will ask my mom the name of it. She owns the nutrition store that I got it from. She can give me some other ideas for you also.

Thanks again Trina....I read the info in the link. How lucky you are to have your mom on the cutting edge of the latest info in the field of nutrition! I will not have access to my computer (has to go into the shop for some work) for a few days but will check back later in the week.

After my surgery,I was prescribed Vicodin for pain when I had to go to the ER. I don't remember the name of the liquid medicine they sent me home with after the surgery.

arthritis/pain control
What type of arthritis do you have Jan?
I have RA and just had surgery two weeks ago. I stopped my RA meds two weeks before surgery and while I was having some issues leading up to surgery, I have had very little since. All I can think is that it's a combination of the pain meds and my immune system being too busy with healing to be messing with my joints. I've been starting to get some twinges in my wrist the past day or so, but I'll be able to re-start my RA meds tomorrow so over all it hasn't been as bad as I imagined it might be.
While in the hospital I was on a pain pump and received Lortab (liquid vicodin) after I was released from the hospital but this will vary based on Dr preference and the patient. Just make sure your doctor knows what you normally take and bring up your concerns prior to surgery so that your doctor can address them. In general, asprin/nsaids are a no no because they can cause stomach irritation and ulcers.

Hey Darcie,
I struggle with osteoarthritis, especialy in one knee and one shoulder. Right now I take Motrin 3x a day and it seems to help me get through the day. If the pain is really bad I will take an occasional Vicodan...but don't do that very often. I have read that nsaids are a no no after the surgery. You say you can go back on your RA meds now.... do the RA meds not upset the pouch? Do you take RA drugs that are NOT nsaids? It seems like the only pain drugs for osteo arthritis are the ones that irritate the pouch.
Congratulations on getting through the surgery and on your way to a new you! I would be interested to know how you feel the weight loss effects the RA.....I bet you will feel so much better!

Jan, I found the pain cream I was telling you about and it's in a white 4 oz tube, with blue writing and says on the front "PAINCHILLER, pain relieving gel with ilex. Non-staining, non-greasy, and odor-vanishing formula, penetrates deep to soothe pain associated with backaches, arthritis, and sore mucles and joints". I guess the name of it is PAINCHILLER. Also, I have been reading about a remedy for my ulcer and found that Aloe juice helps heal gastrointestinal ulcers, which makes sense, and also it list arthritis and joint pain as an illness that it helps because it's an anti-inflammatory. So, maybe you need to do some research on Aloe Vera Juice. You can get the odorless and tasteless juice to drink. That's what I have. It looks and tastes just like water. Also, it promotes blood flow and healing, so it definitely wouldn't hurt your pouch post-op. Would probably help your suture lines heal faster.
