There actually is some longer-term data on the DS. One study took place over a 21-year period (1998 Scopinaro Report - this one is actually on the biliopancreatic diversion procedure alone, which is the malabsorptive component of the DS), and one for 10 years (1998 Hess Report).

Also, many insurance companies now cover the DS and no longer consider it experimental (my particular BCBS plan included, though they do still consider the VSG to be experiemental and will not cover it). The reason it is not used as widely as the RNY is that fewer surgeons perform the procedure - it takes longer in the OR than the RNY, and it is a more complicated procedure that fewer surgeons have taken the time to learn.

Hi Jill!

Jill and I just met on a diabetic forum and I told her about the D/S section here.

Jill, Kelly is the one I was telling you about in my private message (all I told her Kel was that there was someone over here who was about to have a D/S). Do you two know each other from the OH site?

Rebecca

Well I am glad that you post over here Kelly because I am very interested in how you do (and I want to get to watch you shrink!) and I don't frequent the OH site.

Hi, Kelly!

I'm usually reading like crazy over on OH--don't like their forum platform as much as this one, so it sometims gets confusing to follow, but there is SO much DS info there! I actually attended a lunch last weekend with some local DSers from OH. They all shared stories, and there were a few other pre-ops there, too, and it was soooo great to talk to real people about their experiences. Made me even more excited!
