Pre-op Binge eating?
I have a question for the people here. First I am here at the request of my brother. His wife has been planning on getting the bastric bypass surgery for a while now. Her appointment is about a month away. My brother (her husband) has become very concerned about her eating habits. For the past 3 months she had been eating 6 times a day. She said she was supposed to eat 6 times per day about a 1/2 cup of food each time. The purpose was to get her metabalism going better, so it sounded like it was the right thing. Now after about a month of this she was just eating 6 times a day.. Not the half cup of or not even 3/4 of a cup of food each time. Now she is just eating 6 full times a day. She has gained more weight and it currently at about 340 and only 5 foot tall. She was about 310 prior to her eating change. My question is this, is there a planned diet prior to the surgery other than the diet 1 to 2 weeks before? If so does anyone know a link to this information. We want to help her succeed in this and her dieting just seems incorrect. Please help us get her back on track!

Each surgeon is different and most don' have a required pre-op diet....however, it's pretty much a universal practice that if someone gains weight pre-op, then they have a good chance of getting cancelled or postponed fo surgery. She needes some consuling to figure out why she is already sabotaging her efforts. This is a major surgery and 100% of us need professional help to get through it. I believe those that seek help and admit thier issues are more successful in the long run. We didn't get fat overnight and many, many issues are in play. Food is just a symptom of a deeper problem.

Oh boy
I had to lose 10% of my body weight before surgery, but that seems to be the exception, not the rule. Sound like she needs some help. This may be a normal reaction, but it is not healthy, obviously.

My docs office also requires a 10% loss prior to surgery, and I had to go on a full liquid diet (Optifast ) a month and a half prior to surgery. Many people have the "last supper" syndrome where they eat and eat and eat because they're afraid they'll never be able to again. She will be able to eat again...just smaller amounts

If she is gaining weight on a Dr. perscribed diet, then she is doing it wrong. If this is the diet they told her to do, she should check with her Surgeon and/or dietition and get it fixed. You DO NOT gain weight on a diet...especially not LARGE amounts of weight in a short period of time. If she was to eat 1/2 cup per meal 6x's and is eating over that amount..then she is still doing it wrong. You have to be pretty steadfast when you get this surgery. If you over eat you will/can make yourself pretty sick. It's a good habit to learn beforehand. My 3wk. diet prior I lost quite a bit of weight and was hungry most of the time. I calculated all my food intake on E-Diets Nutrition tracker and I was only taking in around 800 cal. a day. She either has something very wrong with her...or she is doing this 'diet' completely wrong. I would totally suggest she see a dietition soon, preferrable with a food journal there so the can discuss the 'rights' and 'wrongs' of what she has been doing. Journaling tends to make you accountable. Best of Luck!

"Fatty Liver"
Although I am a "minor" poster I do read everyones replies and comments every night. I thought I would share information I recently learned about pre op weight loss. Most of us who are over weight enough to consider this surgery have "fatty livers" which means our livers are enlarged to some degree due to extra fat. In order to have the surgery done by the "lap" proceedure as opposed to the "open", the docs have to be able to get their instuments in and around the organs ...ie the liver. By sticking to a pre op diet and loosing some weight - which can shrink the size of the liver - it increases the chances that you will be able to have the "lap" proceedure rather than the "open" and that is a VERY GOOD thing.
