Eating Popcorn?
I have a friend who had the open gastric nearly 5 years ago and some other friends who also have had it in the last 2-3 years. What I am curious about is the friend 5 years out can eat popcorn like it is going out of style for some reason. Why is that? Actual handfuls at a time! I have never experienced anyone else I know that can do that. Are there foods that some people can just eat more of? I was told at my preop that popcorn is a food I probably will never be able to eat again.
What have you all experienced?

Hi Julee,
I'm six weeks out and I can eat poporn. I was very cautious at first because I was afraid the kernel ends - you know, those yellowy shellack-like bits that don't pop - might get stuck but, so far, they've gone down smoothly. In fact, popcorn is good roughage for when I'm constipated. I eat the air-popped kind, in very small quantities, and I don't add salt or butter.

I can also tolerate popcorn, but have only had it twice in the last 3 1/2 months. I have the single serving 100 calorie bags at home for when I want some

I ABSOLUTELY have those foods. Popcorn, chips, pretzels, and other salty munchies are the worst. I seem to be able to eat unlimited amounts. I know my pouch is right, because with "normal" meals and foods I eat small amounts. For example, I eat meals off a small saucer, not piled......for breakfast I eat one pack of oatmeal or a cup of low sugar cereal. These all fill me up with no problem. I think it has to do with the carbs and the way they can become so fine from being chewed. If I switch to soy based snacks that have protein, then I feel full faster. It's a huge challenge for me.

Popcorn
I have no problem eating popcorn either, I can eat a TON of it. I think I can eat so much because it compacts so easily especially when wet. I used to post at another gastric site and when I mentioned pop corn, they told me I was crazy and many other things, and that I should never have eaten popcorn. They actually made me fell guilty. I felt that it was not so bad, it is better then eating SUGAR! I am gald to see to see others have eaten popcorn.

Hi Julee,
I eat popcorn! I'm almost 2 years out, and I've been eating it, probably since about 3 months post op... I eat real popcorn, not microwave, and with real butter, because, my surgeon said, "no more margarine, real butter only!"
Of course, within reason. I can eat about 2 cups at a time, then, my pouch says, "no more"....
I have my favorite snack about 2-3 times a week, my hubby makes it... he's an awesome popcorn maker...

Popcorn, mmmm good! Be careful, I am currently attending a 12 step program because I feel I get two much. I have 2-3 of the small 100Cal 94.4% FF stuff. But unfortunately they come 10 in a box. I use it a reward mostly if I have been good all day.A treat to look forward to. But I don't think it is for everyone. I kinda wished I would have never had it again, DING ooops sorry got go get my FF spray butter and my bag that just finished in the microwave, you know hard it is to type on the computer after that. Good luck

Oh Lordie....I am also in the 12 step popcorn program. My problem is that I have had many moments of indulging at the movies and Karaoke (free on the table) where it has "butter" on it. I swear I can eat TONS of it.
