Question Shopping List!

Hello All,

Need a little help. Time is drawing near and I want to make sure that I am prepared when I come home. I know the diet is strictly limited the first few weeks, and I am a person who needs variety. Can anyone give me some different ideas of what would be "good" to have in the kitchen? How much can you possibly do with "clear fluids"? Never hurts to ask!

Default Mary,

I am hesitant to provide you with a list of things to eat post op when each doctor is different in his/her post op diet restrictions. Have you checked with your doctor on this?

If you are on clear liquids, then one of my favorites that got me through was wonton and egg drop soup strained. They had great flavor and variety! I loved these soups. Sugar Free, Fat Free jello and pudding. SF, FF, popscicles, herbal tea, and beef and chicken broth. Thank goodness this stage is short lived.

I wish you all the best!
God Bless!

Smile RE: Shopping list

Mary,

If I could offer some profound advice it would be this: Do not stock up on anything!! You may not like it post op, and why spend the money. Not only that broth goes a long way, so does Sugar free jello. You won't or shouldn't have much of an appetite. If you do wish to stock up on something I would say sugar free koolaid and crystal light. I still drink that stuff afterwards. The first weeks are about getting in enough liquid. You will not get the nutrients right away or protein. And as for protein shakes, I wouldn't buy a huge thing of that either. You may not like it after surgery. If you do buy protein powder or pre-mixed stuff try and get it at GNC or Costco, if you don't like it you can return it there with your receipt or exchange for something else. I did not like the broth at home, but loved it in the hospital. So I had to strain soups to get some type of nutrition. The SF popsicles were really good too.. for the first week. Haven't touched them since.. Good luck to you and whatever you do, don't stock up. Just buy some diet snapple, diet koolaid, and crystal light. Get some sf jello and pudding but not a lot of it.

Arrow Sounds Great!

Thank you Kim and Christina for the information. Sounds like my diet spending days are definitely over! I'm sure you know how it was girls, everytime a new diet started, even if it was just a decision to "eat healthy", there was a whole new shopping list that needed to be done. What a relief!!!

I've done a kitchen cabinet make-over anyway in my most recent shoppings. So, no matter how much of an urge there is to eat something unhealthy, if it's not in the cabitnets or this fridge you can't do it!

Wonton soup sounds great. I actually hate soup, but I do have a few exceptions and wonton is one of them. I'll let my kids eat the wontons.

I did speak with my nutritionist and everything else is pretty much the same.

Thanks Again You Guys.

Default Mary you're welcome!

It brought a smile to my face when I read, "everytime a new diet started, even if it was just a decision to "eat healthy", there was a whole new shopping list that needed to be done." Yes, and every new diet that started the shopping list came with it a new sense of hope that this ONE would be the one that would work for me.

It sounds like you are starting off great with the cabinet-make over! Good job. The work you do now will make it easier down the road! You'll do great!

Default This is cool

Hey,

I just went shopping for the things I'm going to need for the first few weeks post-op. I purchased, Crystal Light, F/F Jello and Pudding, Cream of Wheat, Oatmeal both plain, Creamed soups, Carb Option Peanutbutter, Sugar Free Jam, and Fat Free Crackers. I did all that and only spent $32.00. Can you imagine??? All that food is going to last at least three weeks. LoL

I could spend thirty dollars a day on breakfast, lunch and dinner. This is great!!!

make sure your jello and pudding are sugar free. it doesn't matter if they're fat free. it's the sugar you don't want. also, watch the crackers. try to stay away from the carbs. try to stick with protein first and carbs last.
good luck

Hey Melanie, I'm sorry, I meant Sugar Free, not Fat Free. The only thing I got Fat Free was the crackers. You are right, I am going to stay with mostly protien and vegetables. Thanks so much.

Kim,

Leftovers???? Wow, that would be something else. $32.00 for a months worth of food!

This is great Mary! You are preparing and you are preparing well. I made the mistake of getting fat free instead of sugar free frozen yogurt and I had my first and hopefully last dumping syndrome.

By the way, I also did some mashed potatoes and baked potatoes during the introduction of soft foods. The shrimp salad spread that is in our recipes section on top of those fat free crackers would be a hit! It's a great recipe and even my kids devoured it!

Best wishes to you for a quick recovery! Lots of love to you too!
