Default Diluted fruit juice; and Communion bread...

Still in dictation (2nd week now) so probably am getting pretty close to getting this thing DONE!

So - am going to dietary support group Sept. 8 for a second go-round, so that I'll have a chance to refresh my knowledge of the 'rules' for early post-ops, and on from there.

I see that they recommend diluting fruit juice with water to avoid dumping - tried that this morning, and it's awful. I'd rather have just the water. But I'm wondering: can you achieve the same effect by drinking, say, an ounce of water first, then immediately follow it with an ounce of fruit juice? Wouldn't this work okay?

Second thing occurs to me as I prepare to go off to church this morning - during first 3 months, no bread: so ------ can I take communion at church or not? (They use pita bread...) I'm accustomed to taking the TINIEST sip of the wine (alcohol was another addiction, quit it 16 years ago...) but do I have to pass up the bread, or ask them to give me just a tiny, tiny, tiny crumb?

Communion should be just fine. Pita bread is not "doughy", so a tiny piece should be ok. I am not sure about the juice thing.

Red face Communion.....

Phil....
I'm a very firm (not firm yet ) BUT a very firm believer in the power of prayer and how God blesses His people when they praise Him and when they follow His steps, and one of those steps is communion, in my honest opinion, if you take communion, I think that you would be blessed beyond belief and would be so safe you'd be surprised!!!
Like Tracie said, pita bread is a crispy bread, it's not doughy like we're not supposed to have till 3 months out, and you're not going to take a huge bite anyway, only a tiny piece, and the smallest sip of the wine, I think would be taking a step in faith, which to me is HUGE!!!!! I really live by faith... so, call me weird!!!!
God bless you Phil!!!!
I'm so excited for your day to get here!!!! Hugs!!!!! God speed!!!!!!

In regards to the juice, it depends on your body and how much/quickly it reacts to sugar. It's not the same to chase water with juice. Liquids pass quickly and your stomach/digestive system would quickly distinguish between the two. It's best to stick with straight water if you don't like juice dilated. I've always preferred diluted juice, so it doesn't bother me. On occasion, I may have a small sip of juice straight. I can do one ounce of juice okay, but 2 ounces make me feel sick. It's all trial and error. Even diluted, I consider having juice as an occasional treat and mostly drink plain water.

Default Tracie - Sandi - Marie: Thank you!

I appreciate your quick responses and support. Good thing to clarify my devious plan for the juice, so since I'm now enjoying water more than I ever did (I think this is because I've pretty much given up diet soda already), I'll go for the nice cold drink of water and skip the juice. Maybe later when my system is better broken in, I can have a little here and there; but my life won't be a ruin if I can't drink juice, so the water and vitamins should do the trick.

Thanks, Sandi for your spiritual support. I work and worship at the same place - this seemed weird to me for a year or two, but now I wouldn't have it any other way - and you're right, the communion should be fine, if we believe God's in charge of it all. My concern is just about the bread we use - it's not those little round crispy communion wafers, but pitas from the grocery store blessed, consecrated, and broken into larger pieces than I think would be prudent for me during the no-bread phase. No, it's not doughy like Wonder bread, but it's not crispy like a Rye-Crisp, either... and the priests do give rather generous-sized pieces sometimes. I'll ask them to give me crumbs - it'll be just as effective, and I won't be taking chances.

You guys are great! It's nice to have a place to vent, ask questions, share observations, support each other, and find our way together into a new way of relating to food in our lives.

Hugs!

Default Lightbulb idea on the juice

Well, fruit juice diluted 50/50 with water is pretty terrible. But who says you have to dilute it with water? How about diluting with Crystal Light? or iced herb tea?

After surgery, you may change your mind because your taste will change. I thought I would be good with crystal light made normal and I had to cut it with water. Maybe fruit juice with water will be ok for you after surgery.

Never thought of that! Yes - the crystal light by itself is pretty over-sweet... and maybe I'll develop new taste perceptions. Wow - there sure is a lot of unexplored territory out ahead. And they say there are no new frontiers - well, here we go!

Glad to have so much useful support on this site from all you "Posties" who've been through the mill and are so willing, eager, and liberal with sharing info - this is truly great.

Met someone recently who had the surgery a couple of years ago at some other hospital/doctor, who apparently got very little advance preparation/education - she apparently didn't know much about dumping, nor was she particularly aware of what she'd have to eat (and not eat) during the first weeks - she had a rough start - I'm sure I'll have my bad days post-op, but with folks like you extending a helping hand, it'll be better than going it alone!
