As with anything, in moderation. Artificial sweeteners tend to have a laxative effect on the body. The amount you can handle varies person to person.

None of the artificial sweetners have a laxative effect with me. I have taken the ones with sorbitol and sugar alcohols to have a laxative effect and nothing happened. I do know that with other people, they end up having to run to the toilet. Splenda is great and I have it in large amounts with no dumping.

Hi, my name is Amber and I am addicted to Splenda (Hi Amber). I use it daily in my tea and coffee. I have a tough time with the sugar alcohol though. I can have a little bit, like one hard candy. Anymore than that and laxative effect doesn't even come close to describing it. You just have to see what you can tolerate. I stay away from Nutra Sweet now because it turns into formaldahyde(sp?) in your system. Has something to do with it changes above 80 degrees. My science professor explained it to me the other day so I decided it isn't worth it to me. However, I ate/drank it for years with no problem. I guess it's just the thought.

I use it without much problem but it tastes SO sweet anyhow that it's easy to not use too much... has anyone tried baking cookies and things with it? How do those go down?
and why is it that if I eat cereal with more than 10g sugar I get sick, but I can eat a chocolate chunk cookie from Atlanta Bread company and that's fine? I don't know why sometimes sugar has zero effect on me even if I have too much, and sometimes a littler bit will make me SO sick.. I've been blaming the cereal thing on the milk, it makes me sicker than anything, and I LOVE cereal. Anyone else have this weird issue?

When i was on a low carb diet I made a pumpkin cheesecake with splenda and it was gross. I did buy some cookies in store that you bake at home and they were ok. I really havent found a good SF deserts.

When baking with Splenda, it's better to go half and half with sugar. It takes sugar for some of the chemical reactions to occur that makes baked good taste good. I never use the full amount of sugar while baking, even if I don't use Splenda. For instance, buttercream frosting has to have real sugar to stand up correctly. Using Splenda, even in small amounts turned the frosting into soup. Good tasting soup to dunk the cake into

There is also an herbal sweetener I wonder if anyone has tried post-op called Stevia. I use it at home now to sweeten teas and coffees. I don't think you can bake with it, but it might be a good alternative for those who can't tolerate artificial sweeteners.

I'm with my itty bitty podmate! None of the artificial sweetners get to me "dumpingwise", but, the sugar alcohols will make me run for the potty in a heartbeat!! I can use all the Splenda I care to with no problem whatsoever. I don't use Sweet n' Low anymore, I like the taste of the Splenda because it's more like "real" sugar to me, and I've left the "blue" behind... It's "yellow" all the way for moi...

I love Stevia and use it every day in my coffee. I found that the "KAL" brand at Sprouts (or Henry's, Boney's or whatever they call themselves now) has the best flavor with no bitter aftertaste. I use Splenda on occasions, but it is artificially chlorinated molecule so it does make me a little nervous. PLease stay away from NutraSweet...it is poison. The FDA wouldn't approve its use back in the 1970's. It wasn't until Reagan took office, ousted the head of the FDA with the help of the CEO (Donald Rumsfeld) of the company (Searle) that discovered NutraSweet, that this poison was pushed on the American consumer. Anyway, enough of me and my conspiracy theories!! (I was on the Grassy Knoll)
