Hooray for California Schools!
Nation's Biggest State Bans Soda in Schools
- 10/15/2005
The nation's most populous state also became one of its most health-conscious recently, with the passage of new legislation banning the sale of carbonated soft drinks in California public schools. The ban will begin taking effect in the next year, with full implementation expected by 2009 at the latest. According to the new law, school cafeterias and vending machines will carry only milk, unsweetened water, and drinks with at least 50% vegetable or fruit juice. Public health officials and doctors expressed hope that the new policy will help stem the tide of childhood obesity, tooth decay and type 2 diabetes, which have recently reached near-epidemic proportions both in California and across the nation.
