Great article...I have a question. I'm four weeks out as of yesterday. I eat yogurt about every other day. I have generic Asidopholis (sp) in the cabinet. Do you think it'd be OK to start taking it now, or should I wait and ask the doctor when I see him on 11/18?
I had my regular PCP do my blood draw yesterday to see where my numbers are. Perhaps I'll wait and see where my numbers lie before adding the probiotic?
Thanks again,
b

AZO Yeast Pills
Are these considered probiotics? I take them pretty regularly. I've been taking strong antibiotics for a tooth infection. Also, I've heard they keep the "good bacteria" balanced in your body.

I've been taking Culturelle for a couple of months now and have been pleased with the results. Initially I took one every day for a week, but have cut back to once a week (maintenance), which seems to be working fine.

What blood tests would you be looking at to see whether or not to start adding probiotics?

I'm pretty sure the only way to test our Normal Flora is with a fecal exam.

WOWOW!!!!!!! I went to Walmart here in Canada, bought the Jameison Brand of Probiotics, not expensive. Started taking it today, two pills. I jumped on the scale tonight and bang I am down 4.8 pounds WTF..... going to keep the Probiotics going to see if this is consistent. This is the biggest drop since week one I have had and normally I am on the scale the first thing when I wake up buck ass naked every morning. I know my body will normaly flucates 3 - 5 during the daytime. I normally don't weigh myself any other time but I got out of the shower, the wife beaked off she lost some weight again (non wls) and I told it is was the flu she just battled through and I jumped on expecting +3 to 5 lbs per normal up from the morning. This is the biggest drop I have had in a month.
Going to keep a close eye on this now and continue the Probiotics. Will report back my results after all it could of been just the big crap I had today LOL. This Probiotics stuff is great regardless if loss is realized or not. Well worth the money. You don't need a blood test either, it was only like $12 bucks and nothing in the directions speaks to blood work up prior to taking.
Love this site and the informative sharing that exchanges! INFORMATION IS POWER! Thank you all!

Just so you know, there is nothing magic about Probiotics. It is just bacteria. The same type of bacteria that you would ingest eating yogurt, but in a highly concentrated dose. This type of bacteria is necessary to your intestinal tract to break down food for easier absorption (and not related to your weight loss...sorry). Also, I'm not sure that taking extra is of any benefit. It's kind of like throwing seeds on a fully grown lawn...

Thanks so much for the reading material, Corrine! I'm convinced that now is the very best time to introduce the probiotics as part of my daily routine. I've ordered two months of the pearls to start with. Thanks!

Normally I would agree with you but there is a "new", (don't know how new), scientific study that says that Gastric Bypass patients who took probiotics had a 7% greater weight loss than those that did not. (Should be able to Google it, I can not remember where I found it since I consumed a lot of reading material prior to surgery).
So....based on that, I started them from day one. Just in case it is a true study!
If not, as you state, it is not going to be harmful and perhaps a good thing on days I don't consume yogurt.
