Advice about Celebrate please :)
Well after a conversation yesterday with a wiser woman then me I have decided that it is worth spending the money to get celebrate vitamins sent over here from the USA as I am sure my store bought multivitamins are not good enough.
I had looked at celebrate before but when I saw it would cost me $180.07 for 1 months worth, inc shipping which is 108.85 British Pounds, I thought it was too much money for jut one month!
However when someone said to me yesterday 'would your funeral cost more?' I decided to look again! I found out if I buy a years supply in advance then it will be $527.42 which is 318.83 British Pounds.
So if I buy a years supply it works out at less than 1 pound a day, which I think is ok!
This is what I am thinking about buying:
Multivitamin Capsule - 90 Day
Calcium PLUS Tablet - 90 Day
Iron+C 30 mg Tablet - 90 Day
B-12 Sublingual (Cherry) 90 Day
These are all in the tablet form because although the chewable ones sound tasty, if I dont like them then I have wasted my money.
I just wondered if anyone who uses celebrate me can tell me if these tablets will cover my requirements? I mean I saw on the celebrate site they have various other vitamins, but are they just extra's or do I need all of them?
Also I am wondering if the chewable versions are better for us than the tablets? if so I will get them instead, even if they taste yuk!
Thanks in advance

What you have listed there are the basics. That's what the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery says everyone who has RNY needs to take. The other stuff is for if you need it, based on your labs. Like, some people get low on vitamin D. But you don't need to take vitamin D unless your blood work shows you are low.
My doctor told me that chewables would be absorbed better than capsules, but I'm not really convinced of that. I know a number of people who take capsules that they swallow and their labs seem to be just fine. I would be very hesitant to buy a year's worth of chewables, too, unless I'd tasted them first. Actually, I'd be hesitant even then. I started out with chewables and liked them fine, but then they started making me nauseous. Have you asked your doctor if capsules will be OK? You might want to discuss it with your doctor. But if your doctor says you need chewables because they will be absorbed better, feel free to ask where he or she is getting that information. Like, did someone do a study?
I really think Celebrate vitamins are worth the money. Well, for the most part. You might find iron cheaper where you live. There's nothing really special about Celebrate iron. Unless you just like the taste, if you get the chewable. It can be hard to find chewable iron in drugstores here in the US, so if someone wants chewable iron, it's worth it to by it from Celebrate. But if you're buying iron you swallow, you can probably get it cheaper elsewhere. I buy iron that I swallow, and I get it cheaper elsewhere.
But there is something special about the multivitamins. They really are the best I've seen, and I've looked at and compared a lot of labels.

Having been around the block a bit with multivitamins and paid the consequences of horrible bloodwork results early out, I can truthfully say that I put my health in the hands of Celebrate.
You're far enough out to take tablets and capsules so that isn't an issue.
You can save a few bucks by buying your sublingual b12 sublinguals/lozenges in the UK.
Also, check out to see if you can get carbonyl iron over there too (that's what Celebrate iron is).
I know calcium citrate is difficult if not impossible to get over there so you're stuck with that although a cheaper option would be to use Upcal-D powder over the Celebrate's calcium.
It's an excellent product. Each scoop or sachet is 500mg elemental calcium citrate. I use the tub at home and the sachets when I'm out and about, Just sling it into your water or whatever: Upcal D - 120 packets :: Medical Nutrition :: Dietary Supplements :: Colonial Medical Assisted Devices
That could mean you just having to ship the multivitamins so it should save you a few pennies.
And just a thought!
Check out eBay.
I just searched eBay UK for calcium citrate: calcium citrate, Health Beauty, Calcium, Vitamins Minerals items at low prices on eBay.co.uk
And again for carbonyl iron. I found one seller who'll ship at a standard flat rate to the UK so you could fill up on that one (don't forget to add vitamin C though): Carbonyl Iron 25 mg Tablets, by Sundown - 200 on eBay (end time 05-Nov-09 19:32:13 GMT)

Thank you ladies, that is just the kind of advice I was looking for
Will def be getting the multi's from celebrate and probably get the other stuff from ebay. I had looked on UK ebay for 'celebrate' and bariatric vitamins etc and not found them, didnt think to put in calcium citrate so thanks Corrine for adding in those links!

Sarah, depending on what your labs are showing you may not need to do additional B-12. The Celebrate multi-vitamin has B12 in it. The amount that they include is enough for most people after RNY. So you may not need additional B-12 if you are taking the Celebrate multi-vitamins. I used to do some additional B-12 with my Celebrate and found that my B-12 levels were MUCH higher than I needed them to be. So I stopped the additional B-12. I've had my labs checked several times since I stopped the B-12 supplement and my levels are in the high-normal range. It doesn't hurt to take additional B-12. Our body can't get too much but I couldn't see much sense in taking them as long as the B-12 in the multi-vitamin was enough.
I did ask Celbrate about the B-12 and the need for additional supplementation. This was the response:

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. From a formulation standpoint and from research, our products contain sufficient levels to ensure that MOST patients will not require additional B12 outside of our multivitamin. There is a common misconception about the absorption of B12. Sublingual or injection are probably the easiest forms for the body to absorb but the body will absorb B12 via passive absorption if taken orally. It is at a rate of 1-2% which is why we need to put so much in to be absorbed. 350 mcg equates to 3.5 to 7 mcg of absorption while the body needs 2 mcg daily to function and this does not take into account what is stored.
The thing to keep in mind is that everyone is different and there are a-lot of factors that play into how a person will react. You may be a person that falls into the B12 minority and if that is the case, then you should probably look at supplementing with additional B12. Working with your RD is the best bet and keeping a close watch on your labs which I know that you do.
I don't think that I am telling you anything that you don't already know but I hope that this helps.
Thanks.
Vic
