Default Shopping Fool..ok, just a fool....

So, I was on a mission today to find sample protein mixes locally so I could have something while I waited for the ones I ordered online.

I ened up with FitSmart Shakes (vanilla and strawberry) and Jay Robbs (chocolate and vanilla). I tried to do a search to see if there was anything posted about the FitSmart ones but didnt see anything. They are made by The Fiber 35 Diet? They have 10gr fiber and 20gr protein---holy cow, 20gr carbs (2 sugar and 2 sugar alcohol.) What do you think?

I also got two greek yogurts. One plain Oikos ($2.16 for a little container of it, I kinda hope I hate it!!!) and one vanilla Chobani (only $1.ish). They had another one...Athens Greek Yogurt but it was really really high in carbs and only had 6gr protein, i think--compared to 15-16gr that are in these other brands. They had Fage too, but they were high in sugar and fat--I think.

I am starting my "practice run" tomorrow through my surgery. So I am ready to go. I am going to really try to lose 10 to 15 pounds before surgery (in five weeks...) My husband and I are joining LA Fitness tomorrow. I have a fridge full of salad stuff, two flavors of salad spritzers and cottage cheese, tuna, feta cheese, ice tea, fake sugar, sugar free syrup, splenda-mocha for my coffee (is one little serving of International Delight Italian Cream really terrible??? I just love it!!! I figured it was, which is why I got the splenda crap) ....I think I am good to go. Wish me luck!!!!! (AND WILL POWER!!)

wow, that's pricey for the okios, at least around here. they're .99 cents a small container in my neck of the woods!

As for the fage.. if you get the 2% which is what I get, it is not at all high in sugar or fat.

Not sure about the protein samples, as I've never used any.. just know that for many of us, the sugar alcohol is EVIL.. I avoid it like the plague!

Kel, I am thinking that the 2% wasnt an option. They had honey and blueberry, and strawberry. That was it. I assume in that little side compartment is the flavoring? I was wondering if i just didnt mix it if it would be just like trying plain. I didnt think to look for it at the health food store I went to for the protein.

I think I may return these two FitSmart samples. I am not sure why I didnt notice the sugar in it. I think it could have been because i wanted to get out of there fast!!! The lady asked if she could help me, and i told her I was having bypass surgery and needed the best protein stuff for post-op and she had no idea what i was talking about. BUT it was obvious she had an opinion on the surgery and she was biting her tongue so she wouldnt let me have it. So, i just grabbed these and tried to leave. However, they were ringing up at 25.00 each, and that turned into a huge production...and she had to do so much work to get them to ring up for 2.99 that by that time i didnt want to cancel the sale. BUT, i have no problem returning them. when she isnt there, of course. She was rolling her eyes..."oh that surgery, thats really a big deal these days...(eye roll) ya, well...good luck with that...." GRRRR.

On the other side, the kid at GNC was awesome. He knew what we needed and how much. He was great. No samples, but if you get one of their products and dont like it because of the taste you can return it. BUT he said, before I do--try making it several different ways--milk, water, half and half, SF pudding...see if there is a way that I like first...if nothing works bring it back for a full refund. I thought that was nice. I didnt buy any though.

I think Oikos is about $2 a container here, too. I just bought some the other day. My Kroger just started carrying it.

I would take the Fit Smart back, I think. I think that's a lot of carbs. I think the sugar in it is OK, though. I use Chike, and I think it has 3 or 4 grams of sugar per serving.

The guy at GNC is right. You can try it mixed different ways before you decide if you like it or not. There is a blog I like to read that is written by a women who had RNY and she has this long list of all the things you can do with a scoop of vanilla protein powder- mix it with water, mix it with milk, mix it with soy milk, mix it with coffee, mix it with pudding, etc, etc, etc. There's a lot of ways to fix a scoop of vanilla protein!

Regarding the Fage. I don't buy any of the ones with additives.. just plain 2% fat yogurt. The others do have too much sugar and I'm not sure of the fat content on those either.. so probably made with their full fat variety. it is much easier to buy the plain and doctor it up to our own liking.

hopefully you can find the 2% plain.. which for me, is the best of both worlds.. low fat, low sugar, fantastic taste and texture and I can do with it what I wish..

good luck.

OH.. and be very careful with the GNC people... they sometimes steer people towards those bullets, which is not a good source of protein at all. Just go in with as much info as you can ahead of time so you can't be swayed to buy something that isn't good for you.

Stacey, I am glad to hear that you got your surgery date, mine is tomorrow! I admire you for getting everything to try out. I have been on a 2 week liquid diet and having slim fast high protein drinks. I have some Whey protein powder, but as I read your post I realized I should have tried some various samples. May I ask where you bought your ? I want to try to get some as well. Thanks Diann

Diann,

GNC and the Vitamin Shoppe both sometimes have samples. Also, if you buy a tub of something at GNC and don't like it, you can return it within 30 days as long as you have your receipt. I think they give you store credit, they probably don't give you your money back.

You can also order samples online. You can get samples of lots of different brands at Vitalady.com - Protein Supplements, Vitamins & Minerals, and Safe Snacks!, and you can also get samples at Chike Nutrition - Best Tasting Meal Replacement Shake. Guaranteed. Pour, Shake, Drink & Go! and UNJURY Medical Quality Whey Protein Isolate. Great Tasting Whey Protein Supplements for Everyday Health! High Protein and High Quality..

Watch out for the high protein Slim Fast after surgery. It's kinda high in sugar. You might be able to tolerate that much sugar OK, but you might not. It's really not that high in protein either, just 15 grams.

Kelly

Good luck, Diann! I got my samples at a store just called Health Foods. I ordered some online from Chike, too. The GNC and Vitamin World at the mall did not have samples. Vitamin World didnt have much, actually. GNC had a great deal on their protein. It was on sale for 35.99 for five pounds, or get two for $49.99 (reg price was 39.99 each.) They had a few flavors. The guy was really nice and knew what I was supposed to have (the whey isolate--60-80 grams.) They didnt have any samples, but had a couple brands but he said that theirs had the most protein per serving for the least amount of money. He also said the chocolate was the closet to Hersheys that there is. Who knows if thats true or not?

On another note. I tried the vanilla greek yogurt I bought. It was pretty gross. I COULD eat it if I had to, but I wouldnt eat it for pleasure. THAT was BEFORE I added a tiny bit of the Splenda Mocha to it. THEN it was delicious.

I also made up a gigantic supply of salad that should last my husband and I a week! I put tons of veggies in it. Plus some Feta! YUM!!!! I am thinking I will be skinny by next week, what do you think?????????????????
