Oatmeal
Hi Everyone....I'm new around here. I had my Rouxen-Y surgery a little over 3 months ago and have lost 66 pounds. I lost 49 pounds before the surgery so I've lost a total of 115 pounds and it feels great. I've dropped 10 pant sizes already. I still have another 50 pounds to go which will put me at 180. I'll be very happy at that weight.
Anyway....I had a question about oatmeal. I love oatmeal and ate a lot of it before the surgery. I've heard from a lot of people that I'm not supposed to eat oatmeal after the surgery. It even says so in the book they gave me.My surgeon told me it's fine to eat though. I was also told that if I want to eat it to only buy the weight control instant oatmeal. Is there a reason for this? According to all the nutritional info on the back of that and the regular quaker oats they are almost exactly the same except the instant has 300 mg of salt in it a serving. The instant has a couple more grams of protein in it also. Is the instant just easier to digest in the new pouch? I'd rather eat the regular oatmeal if it's ok to do so. What do others do about oatmeal? Thanks
Scott

My doctor/nutritionist started me on the pureed diet with oatmeal and cream of wheat. They never said it had to be instant, so I would assume the regular oatmeal is fine.

If there is one thing that I have learned from this surgery, it is that I no longer live to eat. I eat to live.

Grats on your weight loss, you have done awesome!
It's so much that we are never supposed to eat oatmeal post op it's just that it's a slider food. Meaning it's soft and mushy and will not stay in your pouch very long and can cause you to become hungry again sooner. That being said, I still eat it once in a while just because I have always loved it. I may have it 2 or 3 times a month at most though. I used instant and on weekends when I have more time I make the steel cut oats just because they have more fiber and I try to get that in anywhere I can.
I would say as long as you are not eating it everyday, it should not be an issue.

Suz.. do you have a trader joes available? They have some frozen Irish Steel Cut Oatmeal that is delish! Two minutes in the microwave and you're got some warm, yummy oatmeal!
I would never want to eat that mushy instant stuff again once I had this stuff! I stock up when I go- cuz "my" TJ's is over 4 hours away!
I don't understand a nut telling people to pass over the good stuff in place of that instant

I wish we had one even within a 4 hour drive, I would do it!! I think the closest one is about a 7 hour drive. No food is worth that to me...wait, did I just say that? Shit this surgery really has changed me!
Luckily our commissary sells the quick cooking steel cut and I use that alot, some cinnamon, cardamom and a little Splenda and it's good to go. I really do like it, but I do notice that I am hungry about a hour after I eat it vs like if I have an egg or a Morningstar patty it holds me for about 4 hours.

I was allowed oatmeal early out but it's one of those foods I avoid cause I can just keep stuffing it in.
Sherry (I believe) posted a link to overnight crockpot pinhead oatmeal and it truly is THE best oatmeal ever - with no mess: Overnight Crockpot Steel-Cut Oatmeal

I eat oatmeal now, and it's funny cause I never liked it pre-op, but now I love it. I guess I am ashamed to say that I do eat the instant weight control stuff. I've never tried the regular oatmeal...I'd have no idea how to make it Anyway, I find that it does fill me up and I feel full for a long time when I eat it. I make mine pretty think, so maybe that's why it stays with me? I just dont think I could eat runny oatmeal (which is what my nut recommended for early out). Anyway, I don't know if this helps or not, but I thought I would throw it out there

Yep.. comes in a smallish box.. holds two rounds of the stuff, so it's kind of a lot for an early post opper but it's good for me now. Last time I bought some it was $1.59 for two servings so not the cheapest way to get them but for me, it is fine. I don't have it that often to make it a concern and this way the oats won't go bad on me like they would if they were just sitting on a shelf for years at a time before they were used up.
Once you have steal cut oatmeal, you'll never want that other mush again!

My post op diets had oatmeal on the menu. Oatmeal is great for the chlorestoral levels as well, good for the heart. I eat it from time to time without sugar, I use Splenda instead.
