Stacie, I would personally look for a different protein shake. This one has 30 grams of sugar in it. You might or might not dump on that after surgery, but even if you don't dump, I don't think that much sugar will really help you lose weight. It also only has 10 grams of protein, which is not much at all. You could drink 10 ounces of skim milk to get that amount of protein, and it would only have about 100 calories, while this thing has 199 calories. I realize it may taste better than plain milk, but you get my point.
When I look for a protein shake, I look for something that has 20 - 30 grams of protein, not more than a few grams of sugar, and try to keep it to 200 calories or less per shake. Although I think my favorite is actually about 235 calories per shake.
If you want something coffee-flavored, and I love coffee-flavored drinks, there are several brands that make coffee-flavored protein powder. You can also add instant coffee to a chocolate or vanilla protein shake. I make a shake with eight ounces skim milk, a scoop of vanilla protein powder, and a packet of General Foods International sugar free vanilla latte mix. That does have caffeine in it though. Not a lot, about the amount in half a cup of coffee. But it's caffeine, so you might not want to do that.
I like my protein shakes made in the blender. I think it dissolves the powder better than just shaking them or stirring them. Except for Syntrax Nectar. It gets way too foamy in the blender. It dissolves just fine if you shake it.
I put the milk and the powder and any kind of flavoring in first and blend it for a few seconds. Then I put ice cubes in and blend some more. I think they are way better with ice. Makes it thicker and more like a milkshake instead of just flavored milk. If I want to put fruit in, I put it in at the end too, with the ice. Or I just use frozen fruit and skip the ice.
