Default VegLife Iron Supplement

Does anyone take (or have taken) and iron supplement called VegLife? I got a bottle at Henry's and just wondered if anyone recommends or does not recommend it.

It's got (per tablet) 20mg Vit C, 30mcg folate, 15mcg B12 and 25mg iron (ferrous fumerate).

Should I be taking 4 of these a day? Do I need more Vit C with them?

Any help or advice would be great - these are much cheaper than the chewables, so I hope you guys think they will be fine.

Thanks!

I used the search function first and got zero results, so that's why I posted the question. I was hoping someone was using them and just hadn't posted about it. Or I was hoping someone more familiar with vitamins and such would offer up some advice based on the nutrient values I listed. I have two months before my next labs, so I guess I'll take them and will figure it out then one way or the other.

Thanks for your response.

Nicki,

Ferrous fumerate and carbonyl iron are the most absorbable of the irons for us.

Personally, I like take 500mg of vitamin C with my iron supplements - 20mg in the VegLife Iron is pretty pathetic.

As to how much you take - it really depends on what your iron levels are. Have you had recent bloodwork done? You don't need to be taking 100mg of iron a day if you don't need it. Iron is not excreted - we stored it and an overload can cause liver and heart damage.

The RDA for us is a total goal intake of 50-100mg a day (for menstruating women) but you really need to have bloodwork done.

In your shoes, I'd start with 50mg and see what your bloodworks shows next time. But I'm not a doctor.

Hey Corrine - thanks for the reply!

I was wondering most about the vitamin C. I was taking the Celebrate chewable iron which has 60mg of Vit C and 30mg of iron.

My last bloodwork showed low iron and I was told to start taking 2 supplements a day. However, we didn't discuss the amount or what I was currently taking. I assumed I was just to double my current dose which made 60mg total for the day. I checked the recommendations from the doctors office and it stated 50mg twice a day, hence the question. I couldn't find anything about how much of the iron was or was not absorbed but I assumed I should be taking more than the recommended for "normal" people - just didn't know how much!

I didn't know iron was stored, so thanks for that! I think I will compromise and take 3 a day for a total of 75mg. Then check my bloodwork in 2 months.

I appreciate your time and knowledge!!!

Three a day seems like a good place to start. Just get your blood checked in a couple months and adjust from there. I would take some extra vitamin C with it. I guess if you are taking three, you are getting 60 mg, but that still doesn't seem like very much.

Thanks Kelly. I think I will start with 3 and take an extra Vit C tab with them to be safe. If I remember correctly, Vit. C is not one of the toxic vitamins, so extra is ok right? Too many things to think about!!!

Thanks again!

I think you can take TONS of vitamin C before you have to worry about it, yeah.
