Default Pre-op Diet Advice

Hi there fellow WLSers!

I am 20 days away from my big day (surgery) and I have been reading that many of you were put on a pre-op diet. My surgeon never mentioned anything about a pre-op diet so I'm looking for some advice on this. I want to go into this as healthy as possible so if you could help.....

What does the pre-op diet consist of? How much and how often?

Thanks in advance

~Jewl~

Different docs have different requirements for a pre-op diet. Some don't require any special diet. Some require a two week liquid diet. Some just require a low fat low carb diet.

If your doc doesn't require anything special, I just recommend you do low fat low carb. The purpose is to shrink the liver, which tends to be rather fatty, especially in obese people. It can get in the way during surgery if it's too fatty. Shrinking it with a pre-op diet makes it easier for the surgeon to operate and reduces your risk of complications.

I would say call your surgeon or the office and find out if you need one and if so ask for all the specifics. It would really suck if you had to diet before and nobody told you. =( In the papers I got it said if I gain any weight my surgery could be canceled. That's not every surgeon though.

I had a pre-op diet and no one told me! Luckily I did one on my own.

I allowed myself 2 protein drinks and 2 salads a day.. maybe a piece of fish if I was still hungry. I did this for a week. Good luck to you!!!
