NO Protein Supplement
Hello all, I am new to this site but I have been reading all the threads. I had RNY on the 09/14/2009. I have lost about 22 pounds since then. My problem is that I cannot tolerate any protein drink. I have tried all the recipes I could find. I tried all of UNJURY flavors and threw up. I have tried ISOPURE RTD threw up from the mucus that accumulated from the after taste. I have tried muscle milk light and pure protein. Could not stomach either. I need help becasue I want to lose the weight but not my hair. I am doing all the other supplements, calcium citrate, multi, b-12, b-50, iron and prevacid. Can anyone help me?????

Are you mixing protein powder with milk or water? I couldn't tolerate protein powder with milk, but when I mixed with water, it went down a lot better and stayed down.

Try ordering some of the nectars from vitalady.com and mixing them with water. It'll go down a lot easier!

I have tried most of them mixed in water or in skim milk. Still no good. But I will try vita lady. This all seems to me like a very expensive lifestyle for the rest of my life between the protein supplements and vitamins. Can anyone reccomend a good tasting nectar flavor?

My favorite of the Nectars is roadside lemonade. I thought the lemon tea was nasty.
It's common to have trouble finding a protein drink you like, unfortuantely. You can get samples of all kinds of drinks at vitalady. You might want to try Chike, too. You can get samples at Chike Nutrition - Best Tasting Meal Replacement Shake. Guaranteed. Pour, Shake, Drink & Go!. Some people become lactose intolerant after RNY, so the milk might be what's upsetting your tummy. Try them mixed in water.
You can also get unflavored protein powder and add it to food to boost your protein instead of drinking protein shakes. And if you haven't already, check out some Greek yogurt. It's very high in protein.
It is very, very important to get your protein. You will lose lots of hair if you don't, but that is really the least of your problems. Your body needs the amino acids from protein, and if you don't eat enough protein, your body basically starts to eat your muscles to get the amino acids. And that includes your heart muscle.
It is expensive, yes. Not everyone uses protein shakes for life, though. Many people are able to get enough protein from the food they eat after a few months. The vitamins, though, are for life.

I've never used one of the mixes. I didn't want to have to blend or shake. I wanted to buy them premade. They come in a 4 pack. These are the 2 I like:
Myoplex (I like the chocolate flavors)
Muscle Milk (I like the chocolate flavors)

I am in the same boat as you. My family is riding me HARD to get my protein in but, they can't seem to understand that I get sick from it. I have tried so many, mixed with both milk and water. I did order the nectars to try though. I know I have to get something in. I am so sick of hearing "you need to drink it even if you don't like it". Well, IF I could guzzle it, there wouldnt be a problem. I would guzzle and be done. But when you have to sip it and gag every tiny sip down, there's a problem. I wish you luck, and I hope we can find something soon!

I had the same issue. I tried over 2 dozen different protein supplements and threw up every one of them, no matter how it was made. I ended up getting in my protein in using starbucks decaf skinny vanilla lattes. there is 16-20 grams of protein in a venti from the milk. I can't drink milk cold, but steamed it went down great. It got really expensive though since I was doing 2 a day. But I got in all my protein.

There are ways of making your own protein drinks that don't have that protein aftertaste. In the past I would put this together.
1 2% Greek yogurt (Fage)- 17 grams protein in 6 oz contanier
2 envelopes sugar free carnation instant breakfast- 10 grams protein
1 cup skim milk-8 grams protein
1 on-the-go orange crystal light
That will give you 35 grams of protein
If you can't find the greek yogurt you can also use low fat or fat free cottage cheese. Put it in a blender with the other things and you won't even know it has cottage cheese in it.
It is important to get in your protein. But if you can't tolerate the protein supplements there are ways of still getting in your protein. Just be creative.
Another thing many people have done is add powdered milk into drinks. 1/4 cup of fat free powdered milk will give you 8 grams of protein. Make your own hot chocolate with cocoa powder, splenda, some dry milk and some skim milk. 1 cup of milk with 1/4 cup dry milk will give you 16 grams of protein.
I would really suggest that you try the sf carnation instant breakfast. Even if you don't add the yogurt if you use 2 envelopes of the carnation to 8 oz of skim milk you will have 18 grams of protein. Just make sure you buy the sugar free.

Be careful with the Carnation Instant Breakfast. It isn't really sugar free, it's no sugar added, which is not the same thing. The no sugar added has 8 grams of sugar in it. If I made a protein drink with two packets, that would be 16 grams of sugar, and I would dump.
