Too early for a salad craving?
I am almost 7 weeks out and have been craving a salad for the last few weeks or so. I haven't had one since I struggle every day to get all my protein in and haven't wanted to waste the small space in my pouch on lettuce instead of protein. Today, however, I have gotten almost all my protein in, save a few few grams. Do you think it would be okay to have a salad at dinner? We are going to a place that has one of the best antipasta salads - with salami, ham, and mozzarella cheese. I don't plan on eating the salami and will take it easy on the ham since I haven't tried it yet, but I have had small amounts of lettuce before.
Do you think this would be okay or should I still concentrate on protein?
Thanks!

Protein should always be your first concentration - for life!
What is your surgeons or nuts protocol for raw veggies and salads?
I would check there first. Mine was more strict then most here and did not clear me for raw veggies and lettuce until 1 year post op. But like I said he was more strict then most.
His concern was how hard they are to digest. Plus you still got a healing pouch so you may want to be careful this early out.
Good luck.

The list of foods from my surgeon does include veggies, including lettuce. I am, too, concerned about eating the lettuce. I am almost at my daily intake of protein for today, but figure I can get the rest from the meat/cheese in the salad, along with the veggies.
I will place a call to my NUT to see what she says.
Thanks!

I craved salad as well. As a matter of fact the things I craved were salad, cucumbers and lemons with salt. No idea why but luckily my surgeon allowed salads after 6 weeks.

I tend to eat a few salads every week... I prefer Arbys usually..
Iceburg seems to be harder on the pouch then romaine. You might want to start with some sort of chicken caesar. I would pick something with meat on it for sure, preferably not breaded chicken.
Arbys had a farmhouse chicken salad that I usually get with honey mustard. I usually can't even eat half of it. Taco salads work well too. Qdoba, Chipotle and even taco bell all work well (dont eat the shells)..
I'd say go easy and try it... whats the worst that happens, you puke?

I think I'm gonna drive by your Nazi surgeon and throw lettuce heads at his office... I might come back around and chuck some volcano tacos too....

You are all about chucking the tacos huh?
On a serious note, my surgeon said iceburg is the hardest lettuce to digest while it has the least nutritional makeup.
Say what you want about my nazi surgeon, i aint a puker. Neener, Neener!

I wasn't allowed raw fruits or vegetables for three months. I'd ask your doctor or dietician first.

Thanks, everyone! I did put a call into the nutritionist and she said they start to introduce raw veggies around 6 weeks out and that my salad should be fine. I ordered it last night, without salami, and tried to eat mostly the cheese and ham, with a few bits of the lettuce. I only added about 1/3 of the dressing that came with it, too. I had no problems with it at all and it was very good!! I don't think salad will be an occuring part of my menu all the time since I certainly need more protein than what any veggie can give me, but it was a nice change. It was also the first time I had ham since before the surgery.
