Difference between drinking with meals and eating soup?
Maybe this is a dumb question, but we are told to not drink with our meals after RNY but does that mean soup is a bad thing??

Hi....kinda pondered this one myself at one point...but soup is my friend and was even moreso a staple right after surgery. Hasnt been an issue, am curious to see what others say however.

I would say that it depends on what you put in it-
creamy bacon baked potato soup = nutritionally bad, RNY bad
hearty vegetable beef barley = nutritionally good, RYN good
The main thing with liquids is that drinking while eating expands your pouch and allows you to eat more. If you drink a lot right after a meal it can flush out your pouch making you hungrier sooner even though you just ate. Bottom line, you can eat soup if you treat it as a meal (make sure there's protein + fiber + veggies) you are good to go.

SOUP IS A FABULOUS THING!
It's the one thing I could eat and feel like I wasn't deprived AT ALL because I could eat more than just one little serving. It's great for giving you that comfort food feeling! Not to say that I could eat a TON of the stuff, but it was more quantity of food than say a chicken thigh.
Chia's right in that the ingredients of the soup are part of the equation. One of those thick, fatty, pasta-filled, calorie packed soups wouldn't be the BEST choice out there. But I'm a big fan of baked potato soup, bean soup, tomato soup with sausage/beans, etc. etc. SOUP ROCKS POSTOP!

I asked my nutritionist this same question because soup is something that always goes well for me especially when I have a pissy pouch. She encouraged me to try to stick with soups that were thicker in consistency. If it was a soup that had a lot of thin broth I try to eat the soup first, wait awhile and then eat my more dense protein.
I feel a small amount of broth isn't a big deal. I had the same concern about milk on my cereal. She felt milk was okay as long as there was less milk than the cereal. If I do 1 cup of cereal I stick with 1/2 cup of milk.

Thanks for the answers! I agree about being able to eat it and not worry, "Is this bite not going to go down ok??" Soup is back on the menu

i was just thinking about this!
what a quincky dink..before i logged on i was thinking about making a forum asking about soup myself! anyway...it made me think of it because i'm eating soup for lunch (healthy choice chix and noodle) love love love soup. i could eat it everyday. and it doesn't make me feel icky either which is always a plus. ceral on the other hand( i saw there was a comment made about that) i can't handle and i drink the fat free lactaid milk. ive tried it a few times and everytime it made me sick to my stomach.

IMO - I think the overall goal is to not force solid food through your pouch by taking big gulps of liquids between bites. If your eating your soup with a spoon...you'll be OK

another potentially stupid question.... I just had some soup for lunch... I was sort of craving butternut squash soup....so I had about 6 oz. I wondered about this since I had my surgery.... Is it going straight through?
