My Nut told me to GRAZE after surgery!
I was like...WHAT!? Your kidding me......
She said when you eat 3 meals a day you eat larger meals because your hungrier.....larger meals causes the pouch to stretch. She says eating 6 small meals a day will keep your pouch from stretching and your metabolic rate up.
So what says you all? LOL!

Actually early out I was encouraged to eat 5-6 small PLANNED meals a day. It helped to keep my blood sugars at a consistent level. Also it was about the only way I could get in all my protein early out.
Eating several small PLANNED meals a day really isn't grazing. Grazing is when you are almost constantly nibbling on food throughout the day. When meals are planned you are hopefully figuring them into your daily requirements in regards to protein, calories, etc. As long as you are keeping within those daily requirements you should be fine. Its the mindless, unplanned eating that always got me into trouble.

I've done that since day one.

This is what I was told too. Small PLANNED meals, NO GRAZING. My NUT strongly discouraged grazing. She said be prepared in advance so that you avoid grazing. Grazing can eventually lead to over eating and weight gain in the future.

I agree.
My doctor suggested at the beginning that I eat breakfast, snack , lunch, snack, dinner, snack. The "snacks" actually consist of protein drinks, though sometimes I switch it out with something else like apple sauce. It might seem like grazing, I know its tough for me since I didn't use to eat this many times a day before, but its really not that bad.

NO no no no no! I recently quit grazing / snacking all day long and my weight loss was slowed way down, i would never recommend "grazing" but rather 6 "planned" meals throughout the day. That grazing will "beat" the surgery and you wont loose the weight nor will you be successful. Its very difficult to STOP once you've started. I am the example of that it really takes willpower all over again (kinda why i had the surgery to begin with)

Yeah I agree with the PLANNED meals. I did that diet where you eat every 2 hours...American body makeover diet or something another and I did lose weight but all I ever ate was chicken and green beans. That got old every 2 hours lol. I don't know she kinda ran me through the mill there.
I made the comment to her...I do know NOT to graze and she said well, yes you will be grazing.....you will eat off and on all day.

It really does depend on exactly what we define as snacking/grazing.
If you plan a well balanced diet for the day - say 3 small, nutritional meals of whatever - each with a piece of fruit, a yogurt, a few nuts or a cheese stick. Would saving the piece of fruit, yogurt, nuts or cheese to eat in between constitute a snack or grazing? I don't think so.

My surgeons guidelines are 3 meals and 2 high protein snacks--I eat every couple of hours but plan each mini meal

I agree with the nutritionist, BUT I think you may be thinking grazing is defined as what you could do and/or did before surgery: eating large amounts of chips over a period of time, or bouncing from one food to another and eating all the time or constantly putting food in your mouth.
Postop grazing is different. It's SMALL portions over frequent periods of time. It does keep you sated and your body nourished if you eat small frequent amounts of the right food. It's what pretty much ALL thin people do with their diets (so I've seen).
Post op grazing might look like this:
1 scrambled egg at 8 am
1 cheese stick at 10 am
small salad at 12pm
small pack of nuts at 2pm
ham and cheese rollup at 4pm
chicken breast with salad at 6pm
popcorn at 8pm
cheese stick at 10pm
That would be how I define grazing post op. You COULD eat/graze like you did pre-op. Some do and then they don't lose or maintain weight loss.
It's all about the portions AND the food choices.
