Question Did anyone suffer from Hair loss after WL surgery?

A friend of mine had gastric bypass earlier this year and said that she had been loosing hair. I asked my surgeon about it and she said that everyone who has this surgery looses hair after a few months because of the lack of vitamins and nutrition in our body which we loose alot of when we loose large amounts of weight at one time.
I was wondering if this has happened to anyone and if so, what did you do about it and how long did it last and take for you to stop loosing your hair?

I'm losing hair...it started about 2 months out. My hair was already thin (especially in the front) due to PCOS, so now it's REALLY thin. I have bare spots showing in some places.

Some people don't lose any hair, it just depends. Just concentrate on getting all of your vitamins in, and at least 80-100 grams of protein a day. I had problems with both of those things, and I think I'm losing more hair because of it.

Hair growth goes through cycles. For awhile your hair in "statis", meaning you don't grow any new ones. Then it goes into a different cycle where you grow new hairs. Someone (Corrine, I think?) posted an excellent article about it recently.

Even though my hair looks like $hit now, I still don't regret the surgery. It will eventually grow back, and I'll have a skinny new body to go with it.

Even if you get all your nutrition/vitamins, you will probably still lose hair. It happens because of the rapid weight loss. But you could lose even more if you don't get the nutrition. And like they said, it will grow back. I started losing mine at 1 month out. It has slowed some but it's still worse than before surgery. And I have already noticed new growths of hair. When you stop losing weight the hair loss will stop completely if you are getting your nutrtion and it will grow back. This is what I have been told anyway!

I lost what felt like handfuls of hair over the course of 3 to 9 months out...It grows back...a small price to pay...it is also due to the effects of anesthesia.

Us "Bypass Baldies" have stories to tell! It's still better than being fat!

I eat and drink protein - lots and lots of protein. I take 1000 mg Biotin every day. My hair is still falling out. I dyed it dark chocolate brown - now I can actually SEE it falling out! (It was grey/white)

I may or may not get a wig. I keep it short and spiked.

From a beautician's point of view and I hope this helps everyone; as human beings we on a daily basis lose approximately 100 hairs. If we did not "shed" our hairs we would look like big foot. So please keep in mind that you're already losing hair on a daily basis and on top of that with what your body has gone through you are losing a bit extra on top of that. As advice on this post eat protien and lots of it. Protein builds the blocks that grow muscle, hair, nails, and a healthy body.

Hey thanks for the info!
I've already begun taking Biotin for my hair. And I have a load of it for after my surgery as well. I have my hair died blond right now and im thinking about dying it something closer to my natural color so that I wont have to dye it after surgery when if starts falling out.
Protein will be my bestfriend too. lol
