Question Post-Op Question: What foods can you no longer tolerate?

I have a few friends who have had the surgery done and they say theyre are alot of foods that theyre stomach will simply not hold or wont adjust well to. One friend of mine says she can no longer eat pasta at all, not even to just treat herself.. she says it makes her sick. And she always loved pasta!(Maybe because pasta's heavy?) and then another friend said the same thing about milk and steak.

So what foods don't work for you anymore after your Weight Loss Surgery?

Good Morning!

Well, as said like a gazillion times, everyone is different. I'm not sure what type of GBS your considering, but I have read on here some people have issues with dairy products and such. I had RNY, and I can tell you of my personal experience. I think mostly it's a trial and error process. I do remember my surgeon telling me though that one day you may tolerate something and the next not.

For me I found that I can not tolerate grapes, apples and citrus fruit. I still eat them on ocassion, but they usually cause gas and diarrhea, so I usually pass them up. I do not tolerate sugars and fats well. I have learned that I can have up to a 1/2 c. of icecream but it gives me really bad gas. I don't eat it often but ocassionally I like to have a treat. Also anything fried, especially deep fried, fish, chicken etc. gives me really bad gas too. I also still dump if I eat too much sugar or fats. Not everyone dumps, but I still do.

I do not tolerate nuts, poppy seeds or sesame seeds, but I had that problem pre-RNY. I eat oatmeal alot for breakfast, but I usually pass up dry cereals as they have too much sugar. I have a problem with Splenda. Most folks don't, but I do. Currently, I'm having a problem with most meats, mostly chicken, some days I can eat it others I can't. I find I do better with it if I eat it in something like salad v.s. just trying to eat chicken. Not sure why, I think maybe because I chew it better if it's in something. Still having a problem with bead/toast. Some days I can eat it others I clogg/get stuck and end up throwing up.

Well, not sure if I helped here, but like I said, everyone's different and the further out you get the easier it is to tolerate/eat foods.

Sharon

Of the foods I've tried, I don't seem to have too many limitations, other the quantity... the caveat being 'what I've tried".. Occasionally eggs, a mainstay very early out, will sit in my pouch like lead but not every time.

Before the surgery I loved Broccoli, now I can't even stand the smell of it. It totally nauseates me. However, now I enjoy skim milk whereas before I could tolerate only 1% and only in limited quantities. Everybody's different in this area (is there an echo in here?).

we are all so different.... what works for one may not work for another.

i can't do much of anything with a dough-y consistency. bread does not tend to work. tortillas, bread that's isn't more of a "crumbly" texture, rolls, heavy pasta, etc. these are really not good for us anyway.

Ditto on what everyone has said about being different. I can tolerate almost everything but, when I say tolerate, I mean I don't throw up. I have always been lactose intolerant and have, since I was in my teens, gotten very used to occasional gastrointestinal issues so I'm not usually phased by it. I do feel quite ill (just general yuckiness) when I eat greasy fried food and a lot of fruit. Dry meats and eggs do not sit well either but if I chew them really well I can usually get them down.

It's all part of a journey. I hate to seem vague but everyone has their own issues to deal with. You just need to test the waters and see what works best for you!

Now at almost 9 months post-op I can tolerate most any foods. But greasy foods and I are not friends (which works well for me!) and I have to be careful with doughy breads. Fruits & veggies are not a problem. Milk in small amounts is fine. Up til about 5 weeks post-op my pouch tolerated eggs...then at that point the pouch decided that it was not going to keep them down any longer. So for 4-5 months I didn't even try eggs (scrambled, "fried")...but now they are no problem.

It's going to be a trial-and-error process...the pouch is ALL KNOWING...what it says...GOES...period!!!

Wow SdeRosette..
Thansk for sharing! Im supposed to be having Laproscotic gastric Bypass surgery but do not have a date as of yet.
Thats alot of things that you definatly have to avoid and not all of those foods are THAT fattening.. I thought only the fattening or sweet or maybe heavy foods would give you a problem like the problems you have when you eat these foods.
Thats honestly alittle scary.. how do you deal with it or do you wish maybe you never got this surgery or was it all worth it? And what things do you eat like for lunch and dinner? Do you do the 3-5 small meals a day with snacks? And how small are youre meals?
I dont have a problem with elliminating fattening foods, im not much of a junk food eater never have been (ofcourse on occasion) and I dont even have 3 meals a day I think I only have about 2 sometimes 3 thats it no snacks. But my problem is when I do eat I have large portions and I love pasta. But like if eatting fruits which I love or even veggies, that are supposed to be good for you, will make me sick then thats where it gets alittle scary to be honest. lol

There are some general rules about eating and it works for some and some not. Steak is my best friend. Its my food choice when ever I go out to a restaurant as I know it will always be fine in the pouch. The longer out you are, the more choices you have, although chicken bothered me last night super bad, but that hasn't happened in a really long time..but its a stressful week and I am on the road today on course, so stress is higher and that is a trigger for me. I can do almost anything at this stage, however I choose not to eat many foods for the reasons they got me fat in the first place.

I do miss some foods, sometimes...not all the time, and I am very happy to not have to eat large amounts of food. Really if I didn't have to eat, it would be easier. Biggest challenge for me is one the road. For example today, I left home early and drove 300 miles through the mountains where there is one gas station. Thus I have to pack food to eat on the way and some things for the hotel for the next 4 days. I hit the grocery store here and bought water, banana, cheese, granola bars and coffee. Take me through the moments of the day. I packed some dry stuff from home, ie: hot cocoa, almonds, and 100 calorie snack packs.

Thanks for youre response Agodewey
You are so right about the brocolli.. I get confused when people say they cant eat soemthing.. I wonder if they mean if the taste of it bothers them now or actually holding it in their stomachs.
I have lost 77 pounds before in the past with the help of a dietician/nutritionist (which didnt last long at all!) but there were soo many things I coudlnt eat and after not eatting them for about a month the thought of them bothered me made me sick and thats what kept me away from them. I would take my neiece as a treat to mcdonalds and never had a craving for a big mack and fries.. I was completely content withnot having any of it and the thought if putting anything that I use to eat in my mouth made me naucious!
I remember a friend of mine asked me once "do you think you can honestly go with not eatting any of those things ever again" and I told her "yes I do, because it makes me sick now, why or how could I eat soemthign that makes me sick?"
But that was then and obviously thats not the case anymore and I have reached my highest in weight so Im considering the lap gb and will probably go back to those feelings again but the thought of not being able to tolerate fish or fruits and veggies is a scary thing to me.
