Excess Protein???
What happens if we consume a vast quantity of protein?
In the UK, the idea is that you should consume 1/1.5 grammes protein per kilo body weight if you are fit and healthy
2 grammes protein if you are pregnant or recovering from an illness
3 grammes if you have had wls.
As you decrease your weight, obviously your protein intake reduces gradually too...
I have for each breakfast a 53.4 grammes protein shake which actually tastes nice and which lasts for 2.5/3 hours! I might have a protein bar mid-morning and another one mid-afternoon, each 20.4 making my daily protein supplement 94.20 grammes protein, "only" just under a third of my daily intake. Only that feels like LOADS of protein as it is! My food intake will add a bit, but probably not that much...
Any ideas?
Thank you!
Cheers,
Vim

Someone put a post on here sometime ago that said 80/80/80. 80g protein a day, 80oz water a day, and 80 minutes of exercise at least 3 times a week. That has been my guide. I've also heard 80-100 g of protein a day. Unless it is "time release" protein, we only assimmilate 30 g of protein at a time. So eating more than 4 oz of meat is a waste and so it drinking more than 30 g protein drinks.
Personally, I log all my food intake: calories, carbs, proteins. I try to keep it below 40 g of carbs, at least 80 g protein, and under 1000 calories a day. When I get to "suppertime", if I am high on everything but protein (which I usually am), I have a carb-free protein mix with water, not milk.
I have found that I can't eat much fruit at all. Too many carbs. There are 18 g in a banana! 10 g in watermelon! Berries seem to be better, tho.
Can you consume too much protein? I don't think so. I think it would just go out in the waste. Maybe that's what smells so bad?????

Vim,
I don't eat meat so it's difficult for me to get my protein in with using supplements.
I don't use protein bars but do at least 2 protein drinks a day. My normal is between 100g and 130g of protein a day.
There seems to be differing opinions on just how much protein is too much for us. But as yet, I haven't been able to find anything specifically aimed at WLS and protein requirements.
Both my NUT and surgeon are happy with my protein consumption provided I keep my water level up.

Sounds sensible to me! Vim

Wow, Vim, seems to me like you are doing GREAT! I have been struggling to get in more than 70g protein. I did better when I had two protein drinks per day, but I got lazy and started skipping my morning drink in favor of regular coffee I need to go back to adding a scoop to the coffee. Bad Nyn! But you sound like you are getting in a fine amount to me

It's worth noting that earlier on, my protein intake was around 60-70g of protein total and to be honest, I felt as if my energy levels weren't what they should be.
Adding an extra protein drink seemed to make a world of difference.

I recommend 2 grams protein per lbs of lean mass, to my clients. some people get hung up on eating less fats and this is backwords. we should be more worried about carbs, keep the good fats. EFA's burn fat and help you keep muscle.
