Default Sugar In Milk Question????

I have not posted on this thread yet! I just got a surgery date yesterday (11/10/08) and am waiting on my final insurnace approval. So now I am getting down to the wire. I have a question. I know that after surgery you are not supposed to have any sugars, unless they are naturally found, like in fruit for instance. My dietician told me that it will help that I drink LOTS of milk as it will help to get my required protein in. My question is this. Last night I was looking at my 1% milk and realized that one cup of milk has 12 grams of sugar! I was shocked. Never would have known that Milk had sugar in it. When I look at the ingredients in Milk, sugar is not listed at all. So what am I missing here? Is it truly OK to drink Milk, and if so where is this sugar coming from??

I believe it is natural sugar, lactose. Someone else will probably post with a better answer. I personally can not tolerate the sugar content in milk at all. I have went to the soy milk it has a lot less sugar. I am using the 8th Continent brand and it has like 2 grams of sugar.

Default Natural Sugars

Cassie is right - the sugar in milk is naturally occuring just like in fruit. But, beware, lots of post-opers have trouble with milk right after surgery. I did. I didn't like the taste, it upset my pouch, and it gave me bad gas and diarhea. YUK on all counts. I am able to drink it just fine, now, but for 3 months or so, I wouldn't touch the stuff. Hope this helps! Good luck!

I use skim milk and do fine with it. I started it 4 weeks after surgery. I haven't tried 1% yet. The skim has 12.5g sugar so 1% would probably be fine as well if you can tolerate it. Everyone's different. You just have to try and see a little at a time.

I am one of those people that are super-sensitive to sugar. I dumped on diet yogurt (8 grams sugar) and Liquid Tylenol. But today I ate Fage yogurt with 8 grams sugar and I was fine. The sugars in the other yogurt were from fruit (strawberries) and these sugars were from the milk in the yogurt.

But you should also be aware that a lot of people become lactose intolerant post-op and can't have milk, or need to have lactose free milk or soy milk. There may be protein in milk, but you can get protein without the sugar (which is still sugar) and lactose using protein supplements.

My doctor has a warning next to milk on his foods list: Milk = Liquid Sugar!! So I stay away from it. I have tried it every once in a while but it makes me dump big time!! Yogurt is fine....I always find one that is lower in sugar. Currently I am eating Weight Watchers Yogurt and do very well with it. So I stay away from milk....but some can tolerate it but I wouldn't drink LOTS OF MILK as you were told.....no no no.....
