Default Tell me about your vitamin regimine

Hi all,

I had my 1yr follow up appt on Friday. I can't believe it has been a year already ; how time flies. Anyway I have lost 112 lbs., and the doc tells me I am doing well. (I know I could be doing better )

Anywho, here is my problem. At my 6 month visit my vitamin D level was low. I took a high dose of vit D for a few weeks to get it back up and was told to take calcium with D 2-3x's a day. Fast forward to Friday, my parathyroid hormone level was high, which means that my calcium is likely getting low. So either I am not getting enough calcium or D or both.

I plan to take my calcium with D 3x's a day. They also told me to start taking iron. I have not so far, and my iron level has remained the same. I plan to take the iron a couple times a week for now to avoid bowel problems.

I just don't know how to fit it all in since I have to space out the calcium and cannot take the iron at the same time. At what times do you take your vitamins? Tell me your schedule and what all you take. Can I take my multi at the same time as either of these? I still do 2 kids chewable multis. Should I take these at the same time or at different times? I need a good schedule that I can stick with. Thanks!!

Default liquid, all inclusive, 98% absorption

I had RNY on March 19th. I had been buying bariatric surgery vitamins from various places online since before the surgery to prepare. I was very disheartened at the prices and the taste. After surgery I had a big problem getting anything down that didn't taste good and things that tasted fine before surgery didn't taste good after. I was looking for some way to be able to help others in my situation, save money, and perhaps make money somehow by distributing products that we need after surgery. Well, it all kind of came together for me and I found a product that I LOVE, it's researched and guaranteed, endorsed by well respected people, and it's available as a business to those of us who wish to distribute and make some money too. If you are interested in more info please feel free to drop me a note - I will NOT bother you. I will send you info and leave it at that. I am not interested in spamming or bugging people. You can also check out my website at HeartL.com for some more information. I am just a woman who had RNY and ended up finding something I really needed. I want to share that with you all.

Please accept my apology for using the same words to post about my experience. I don't see the use in retyping the whole thing..... I am not a spammer -- really!!!!

Blessings,
Tarra

Apologies for not replying sooner - I must have missed it.

Indications (from the AREDS study) is that the following is successful in at least halting the progress of macular degeneration:

10mg Lutein (from FloraGLO marigold flower extract)
4mg Zeaxanthin (from FloraGLO marigold flower extract)
1,000mg Omega-3 (purified fish oil)

I get the lutein and omega-3 from vitacost.com and the zeaxanthin from swansons.com

I'm on 20mg lutein, 8mg zeaxanthin and 2,000mg omega-3. My eye doc also favours 10,000IU vitamin A (beta-carotene), zinc and vitamin E (dry form d-alpha tocopheryl succinate) too.

I'd suggest you talk with your doc/NUT about supplementing now.

Lutein are zeaxanthin from marigold extract are naturally occurring carotenoids ("chemicals with nutritive properties that exist in the pigment that colors plants and animals. As a fat-soluble material, carotenoids are ingested by humans in countless colorful fruits and vegetables. They are important as antioxidants, as well as in their capacity to get converted to essential vitamins").

Omega-3 is just an all-round good guy.

The other important thing is to get your eyes tested regularly for "drusen".

Drusen is tiny yellow/white deposits that form under the retina and may indicate early stages of age-related macular degeneration. This is found well before you notice any deterioration in your vision.

Well...... here is a list of everything that is in what I take... and what it does.

I also wanted to mention that calcium is supposed to be taken separately at a different time of day (I take calcium at night and my liquid multi in the morning) because Taking a full dose of calcium together with vitamins and minerals is not a good idea. It could interfere with the absorption of the minerals and once minerals do not absorb well, vitamins do not work properly. So, I take separate 1500 mg of liquid calcium and magnesium
(2 to 1 ratio) before going to sleep. The liquid vitamin I take is one ounce per 160 pounds of weight, so it's adjusted more or less based on weight. One teaspoon per 17 pounds, to be exact.

***************************

Vitamin A: a fat-soluble vitamin that occurs in two forms in nature. It is found in its true form in animal foods such as fish oils and liver. Vitamin A can also be found in vegetables in the form of beta-carotene. It is an anti-oxidant that may protect against disease by neutralizing unstable oxygen molecules, called free radicals, within the body. Vitamin A helps fight colds and infections.

Vitamin B: the B vitamins are a group of eight individual vitamins, often referred to as the B-complex vitamins, which include thiamine (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), pyridoxine (B6), folic acid (B9), cyanocobalamin (B12), pantothenic acid and biotin. Vitamin B helps to recover from excessive alcohol consumption. It is taken by people who have lots of stress in their life. B12 is also known to increase our energy level. It helps maintain healthy nerves, skin and eyes. Folic acid (B9) helps the body make healthy new cells and also assists in tissue growth.

Vitamin C: this vitamin works as an anti-oxidant and is one of the most highly publicized, yet least understood, of all the vitamins. It is indeed a fascinating and very important nutrient. It helps maintain healthy blood vessels, bones and teeth and has been documented in the prevention and healing of numerous ailments and diseases. It is vital to the production of collagen. It helps protect the fat-soluble vitamins A and E as well as fatty acids from oxidation. Recent research has indicated that the intake of anti-oxidants life vitamin C can prevent or counteract cell damage due to aging. Vitamin C is a very important part of a healthy diet and should be taken daily.

Vitamin D: this vitamin has long been known for its important role in regulating body levels of calcium and phosphorus and in mineralization of bone. Receptors for vitamin D are present in a wide variety of cells, and this hormone has biological effects which extend far beyond control of mineral metabolism. Natural diets typically do not contain adequate quantities of vitamin D. Its most dramatic effect is to facilitate intestinal absorption of calcium.

Vitamin E: this vitamin is essential for good health. Numerous clinical studies suggest the vitamin E may help reduce the risk of chronic diseases, such as heart disease, the common cold, and others. The many benefits of vitamin E are well established. More than 1000 studies support the preventive health benefits of this vial nutrient. Vitamin E is a potent anti-oxidant that works primarily to stabilize dangerous free radicals. This vitamin is an essential nutrient that plays a role in disease prevention.

Calcium: this mineral is essential to maintaining total body health. Your body needs it every day, not just to keep your bones and teeth strong over your lifetime but to ensure proper functioning of muscles and nerves. Most Americans are calcium deficient. When blood calcium levels drop too low, this vital mineral is “borrowed” from the bones. The average person loses 400-500 mg of calcium per day. Calcium is also very important for the heart, muscle and nerves to function properly. Too much “borrowing” calcium from the bones could eventually lead to osteoporosis, a disease marked by the deterioration of bone tissue and low bone mass, often caused by calcium deficiency. We recommend taking liquid calcium at nights before you go to sleep, separate from the multi vitamins. Taking multi vitamins with large amounts of calcium could interfere with the proper absorption of the vitamins and minerals.

Magnesium: this is the fourth most abundant mineral in the body and is essential to good health. Approximately 50% of total body magnesium is found in bone. The other half is found inside cells of body tissues and organs. Magnesium is needed for more than 300 biochemical reactions in the body. It helps maintain normal muscle and nerve function, keeps heart rhythm steady, supports a healthy immune system and keeps bones strong. It furthermore helps regulate blood sugar levels, promotes normal blood pressure, and is known to be involved in energy metabolism. There is an increased interest in the role of magnesium in preventing and managing disorders such as hypertension, cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Zinc: this is an essential mineral that is found in almost every one of the billions of cells in our body. It stimulates the activity of approximately 100 enzymes, which are substances that promote biochemical reactions I our body. Zinc supports a healthy immune system, is needed for proper healing of wounds, helps maintain your sense of taste and smell and is needed for DNA synthesis. Zinc is furthermore important for the maintenance of the immune system and gland health. It can be rapidly depleted when the body is fighting an illness such as cold and flu. It is the tenth most abundant element in the human body. Zinc promotes immune system health by activating the production of white blood cells which form the basis of the immune system and destroy both damaged cells and invaders when antibodies recognize a specific antigen or foreign pathogen, such as a virus. Zinc has been shown to play an integral role in combating stress. Zinc also protects the liver from damage.

Selenium: this is a trace mineral essential to good health and a key anti-oxidant. Selenium is incorporated into proteins to make selenoproteins which are important anti-oxidant enzymes. They help prevent cellular damage from free radicals. Selenium may also prevent or slow tumor growth. Clinical studies are investigating whether selenium and/or vitamin E can decrease the risk of prostate cancer in healthy men. According to ongoing studies, selenium is one of a group of anti-oxidants that may help limit the oxidation of LDL cholesterol and thereby help to prevent coronary artery disease. Surveys indicate that individuals with rheumatoid arthritis, a chronic disease that causes pain, stiffness, swelling and loss of function in joints, have reduced selenium levels in their blood. Selenium, as an anti-oxidant, may help to relieve some of these symptoms of arthritis by controlling levels of free radicals

Chromium: this is an essential trace mineral for the human body. It’s important in processing carbohydrates and fats, and it helps cells respond properly to insulin, the hormone produced in the pancreas that makes blood sugar available to the cells as our basic fuel. It has been mentioned (no proof yet available) that chromium in the form of chromium picolinate might promote weight loss, treat Type 2 diabetes, and perhaps even prevent heart disease or alleviate depression.

Glucosamine HCI: this ingredient occurs naturally in the body and stimulates the formation and repair of the body’s articular cartilage. It may provide natural protection against the cartilage damaging effects of some non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Some researchers believe that Glucosamine inhibits joint inflammation and stimulates cartilage cell growth. Over the past three decades numerous clinical studies have reported beneficial effects of Glucosamine. Glucosamine hydrochloride (HCI) is more readily absorbed by the body than simple Glucosamine, so smaller doses are required. Glucosamine HCI may decrease or eliminate discomfort caused by insufficient lubrication and may increase shock absorption abilities of the joints.

Para-Amino Benzoic Acid: this is a B-complex, anti-oxidant vitamin and an essential growth factor for micro-organisms. It is used in the formation of folic acid and the metabolism of protein. It is an anti-oxidant that helps to protect skin from sunburn.

Quercetin Dihydrate: if you are looking for strength, energy and vitality, this is the ingredient which could provide it. Its energy-producing effects help fight fatigue, boost performance and support daily wellness and vitality. This is a potent anti-oxidant that helps fight free radicals that can cause cellular damage. It is found in blueberries, red onions, apples and spinach.

Lutein: this is an anti-oxidant that has benefits for eye, skin and cardiovascular health. Landmark research shows that Lutein supplementation may reverse symptoms of macular degeneration. It is found in the retina of our eyes so it is needed for healthy vision. Lutein also appears to lower the risk of cataracts. Lutein may also help to prevent or slow down the thickening of arteries that is called atherosclerosis which is a major risk for cardiovascular disease.

Inositol: this is an ingredient necessary for the formation of lecithin and functions closely with a B-complex vitamin, Choline. It is a fundamental ingredient of cell membranes and is necessary for proper function of nerves, brain and muscles in the body. It is primarily used in the treatment of liver problems, depression, panic disorder and diabetes. It also aids in the breakdown of fats, helps in the reduction of blood cholesterol. Neurotransmitters such as serotonin in the brain depend on Inositol to function properly. Low levels of this nutrient may result in depression.

Aloe Vera: the Aloe Vera plant has been prized for centuries for its beneficial properties – both internally and externally. The Aloe Vera gel in Passion 4 Life comes from certified organically grown leaves. The leaves are cold-pressed, thereby retaining all the important elements which constitute the beneficial Aloe. It stimulates wound healing and cell proliferation including skin, liver, nerve and blood cells. It modulates inflammatory reactions and decreases pain by reducing swelling, joint and muscle pain and promotes recovery from infections. It helps in decreasing cholesterol, triglyceride, and non-esterified fatty acid levels. It furthermore soothes gastrointestinal problems including ulcers by soothing irritated tissues. It has been used for over 400 years all over the world.

Co Enzyme Q10: this vital anti-oxidant is found in every cell in the body. It is critical in the production of energy within each cell in the human body. Co Q10 is essential for the health of cells, tissues, and organs. The role of enzymes is to facilitate and act as a catalyst for countless chemical reactions in the human body. Co Enzyme Q10 has powerful anti-oxidant effects and destroys free radicals in your body. Co Q10 helps the body’s energy production. This powerful ingredient has many other health benefits. It can aid with weight loss because it helps stimulate the body’s metabolism. It plays a key role in the treatment of cardiovascular illnesses, including congestive heart failure. It also plays a small part in lowering blood pressure. If there is just one thing you do to help maintain your heart’s health, make sure you’re taking Co Q10 daily!

Gingko Biloba: this is a fascinating herb and comes form the oldest living tree species, Geological records indicate that this plant has been growing on earth for 150-200 million years. Chinese monks are credited with keeping this tree in existence, as a sacred herb. It is one of the most well-researched herbs in the world.

Gingko Biloba is the best selling herbal product in the world. In Asia, gingko tree extracts have been used for over 5000 years to treat cardiovascular problems. Gingko’s most powerful effect is on the circulating system. Since gingko increases oxygen flow to the brain it is now also being researched for its role in senility, forgetfulness, headaches, Alzheimer’s and its role in improving alertness and mental performance. Gingko also increases the body’s ability to produce the universal energy molecule adenosine triphosphate (ATP) which can decrease fatigue. Gingko is a highly important antioxidant shown to have a special affinity for scavaging the superoxide radicals.

Gotu Kola: this herb has been used in the Far East for thousands of years. In China, Gotu Kola is one of the reported “miracle elixirs of life”. It was used for the treatment of skin conditions, Lupus, varicose ulcers, eczema and psoriasis. Gotu Kola stimulates the central nervous system, rebuilds energy reserves, helps in lowering blood pressure and helps the body fight off various toxins. It is being used to treat rheumatism, blood diseases, urinary tract infections, venereal diseases and hepatitis. Gotu Kola has a positive effect on the circulatory system. It improves the flow of blood while strengthening the veins and capillaries. It has been used successfully to treat phlebitis, leg cramps and capillaries. It has been used successfully to treat phlebitis, leg cramps and abnormal tingling of the extremities. It is also said to fortify the immune system, both cleansing and feeding it, and to strengthen the adrenals. Gotu Kola contains a blend of compounds that appear to have major anti-oxidant benefits and an ability to stimulate collagen synthesis for tissue regeneration. Recently Gotu Kola has also acquired a considerable reputation as an aphrodisiac, an agent that stimulates sexual desire and ability. It stimulates the central nervous system and aids circulation.

Alpha Lipoic Acid: another major anti-oxidant which is widely used in prevention of various diseases. Its main function is to increase production of glutathione, which helps dissolve toxic substances in the liver. It is known as “the universal anti-oxidant”. ALA has many benefits and all types of people will benefit from taking ALA, especially individuals with some of the following conditions: diabetes or higher than normal blood sugar levels, high cholesterol levels, early stages of cataract and cardiovascular problems such as hardening of the arteries. It is only anti-oxidant known to be both fat and water soluble. Furthermore, unlike any other anti-oxidant, ALA is easily transported across cell membranes, enabling it to confer free radical protection both inside and outside cell structures. Because ALA regenerates glutathione, it gives cells a double does of powerful anti-oxidant protection. ALA is also important in cell metabolism for the production of energy inside the cell. ALA is found to have many promising effects in a while variety of problems and diseases in the body.

Cat’s Claw (Uña de Gato): studies beginning in the 1970’s suggest many uses for Cat’s Claw, which is a woody vine found in the highlands of the Peruvian rain forest. This herb’s name is derived form Uncus, the Latin word for hook, since Cat’s Claw has somewhat large curved thorns that resemble the claws of a cat (thus the name Cat’s Claw). Studies suggest that Cat’s Claw is useful in the treatment of a host of ailments including arthritis, gastrointestinal upsets, ulcers, allergies, PMS, herpes, lupus diabetes, fibromyalgia, rheumatism, depression and many more. Research has shown Cat’s Claw cleanses the entire intestinal tract and assists patients suffering from a broad range of stomach and bowel disorders, including Crohn’s disease, divertiulitis, leaky bowel syndrome, colitis, hemorrhoids, gastritis, irritable bowel syndrome, ulcers, parasites and intestinal flora imbalance. Many naturopathic physicians around the globe, including here in the U.S., are recommending Uña de Gato (Cat’s Claw) to their patients for a variety of health woes. This herb has been found to be safe with consistent reports of its positive effects including the enhanced desire for sexual activity.

Ellagic Acid: this “may be” a potent weapon to fight cancer according to the Hollings Cancer Institute and is now approved by the American Cancer Institute as a naturally occurring phytonutrient that may have preventive or therapeutic activities on the cancer process. Ellagic Acid is a phenolic compound found in red raspberries. It has become known as a potent anti-carcinogenic/anti-mutagenic compound. It also has anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties. Research has shown that Ellagic Acid inhibits the growth of certain tumors caused by carcinogens. A new publication called the “American Cancer Society’s Guide to Complementary and Alternative Cancer Methods” has documented that Ellagic Acid is a very promising natural supplement because it causes apoptosis (cell death) of cancer cells in lab tests with no change to normal healthy cells. Healthy cells have a normal life cycle of approximately 120 days before they die. This process is called apoptosis (natural cell death). The body replaces these dying cells with healthy cells.

Grape Seed Extract: as its name implies, Grape Seed Extract is derived from the small seeds (and occasionally the skins) of red grapes – the same kind that are pressed to make red wine. It is rich in flavonoids, phytochemicals that have anti-oxidant properties, some consider even greater than vitamin C and E. European doctors, for many years, have prescribed Grape Seed Extract for various vascular (vessel) disorders that are likely to benefit form increased blood flow such as diabetes, leg cramps, varicose veins, arm and leg numbness and even impotence. Grape Seed Extract effectively penetrates cell membranes through out the body with its anti-oxidant properties. It can even cross into the brain to protect brain cells from free-radical damage. The risk for heart attack and stroke may be reduced with this potent anti-oxidant, which is believed to prevent the plaque development that can clog arteries. Fibromyalgia is an elusive disorder associated with chronic muscle pain and stiffness. The anti-oxidant power of Grape Seed Extract can help by protecting besieged muscle cells from damage.

Pau d’Arco: this is a natural grown herb that is derived from Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil. Pau d’Arco tea has been used for many centuries by the Indio tribes. The ancient Incas and Aztecs were probably the first to be familiar with this herb’s miraculous healing powers. Pau d’Arco is considered to be one of nature’s most powerful antibiotics and can help with viral infections, even the common flu or cold, fungal infections, skin ulcerations, boils, gastrointestinal upsets and dysentery. Anecdotal evidence tells us that Pau d’Arco can give pain relief, especially to conditions of inflammations and circulatory disorders like Arthritis for example. Pau d’Arco contains a rich and potent source of anti-oxidants known to protect the body by mopping up free radicals, which cause harm to body cells.

Omega Essential Fatty Acids: most Americans are Omega-3 deficient because of our over-processed diets. One of the most common symptoms of Omega-3 deficiency is depression among other mental symptoms. We need essential fatty acids. They are the “good fats” all over the news these days. Good fats compete with bad fats. So it’s important to minimize the intake of trans fats and cholesterol (animal fats) while consuming enough good fats. Also, good fats raise you HDL or “good cholesterol”. One of the jobs of this High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) or “good cholesterol”, is to grab your bad cholesterol (LDL) and escort it to the liver where it is broken down and excreted. I other words, these good fats attack some of the damage already done by the bad fats. This is very important in an age when so many Americans are struggling to get their cholesterol down, and fight heart disease and obesity. EFA’s are necessary fats that humans cannot synthesize and must be obtained through diet and supplements. EFA’s are long chain polyunsaturated acids derived from linolenic and oleic acids.

Lycopene: in one 6-year study by Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Public Health, the diets of more than 47,000 men were studied. Of 46 fruits and vegetables evaluated, only the tomato products (which contain large quantities of lycopene) showed a measurable relationship to reduce prostate cancer risk. As consumption of tomato products increased, levels of lycopene in the blood increased, and the risk for prostate cancer decreased. Ongoing preliminary research suggests that lycopene is associated with reduced risk or macular degenerative disease according to a study published in an October 1998 issue of Lipids.

Amino Acids: these are the “building blocks” of the body. Besides building cells and repairing tissue, they form antibodies to combat invading bacteria & viruses. They are part of the enzyme and hormonal system; they build nucleoproteins (RAN & DNA); they carry oxygen throughout our body and participate in muscle activity. When protein is broken down by digestion, the result is 22 known amino acids. Eight are essential (cannot be manufactured by the body), the rest are non-essential (can be manufactured by the body with proper nutrition). One such essential Amino Acid is Tryptophan. This is a natural relaxant and helps alleviate insomnia by inducing normal sleep; it reduces anxiety and depression; it helps in the treatment of migraine headaches; it helps the immune system; it helps reduce the risk of artery and heart spasms; it works with lysine in reducing cholesterol levels.

Phyto Nutrients: these are found in foods from plants that are not classified as vitamins or minerals. Research has shown that many phyto nutrients work together with vitamins and minerals and do have anti-oxidant properties. The term phyto nutrient refers to substances found in food that behave in certain beneficial way in the body. Over 100 phyto nutrients have been identified. Many have a regulating effect on the immune and hormonal systems in the body and protect cells from damage. Cell damage is at the root of many diseases such as cancer, heart disease and even premature aging.

Plant Source Ionic Trace Minerals: they give you what you should be getting from your vegetables. However, our depleted soils have been strip-mines for 100+ years. Soils no longer contain the minerals your body needs. As a result, many Americans suffer from mineral deficient diseases. Predigested by plants, the plant source minerals in Passion 4 Life are the most absorbable nutrients you can get. At least 98% of the plant source minerals in Passion 4 Life can be absorbed, as opposed to chelated (40-60%) or regular elemental (8-12%) minerals. They are “adaptagens”. That means the plant source minerals in Passion 4 Life will not interfere with any other supplemental or therapeutic program. Instead, they assist any and all diets, medication or herbs to work faster and more efficiently. They are an inexpensive “preventative”. One ounce of Passion 4 Life a day contains more minerals than most people get in a week. There are more than 100 mineral elements found on earth. Four of these elements, oxygen, hydrogen, carbon and nitrogen, make up 96% of our body.
